Our wedding day was a celebration of not only our love, but all things autumnal and pumpkins!
We got married in the church in the Somerset village that I grew up in - this had been a long standing dream of mine. I got ready at my parents' house in the morning, and as they live a very short walk away from the church, I got to walk to my wedding! Walking through the village in all its autumnal splendour whilst wearing my wedding dress is not an experience I am going to forget any time soon! Walking to the church with my parents, my sister and her boyfriend and my bridesman (one of my oldest friends from school) was such a lovely way to help me relax before the ceremony. Walking a route that I must've walked thousands of times in my life on such a special day with such special people with me was a privilege.
The church itself is so grand and beautiful (some of the oldest parts of the building date back to the 13th Century) that we didn't feel much decoration was necessary so we commissioned our florist (Sallyann from Stems of Taunton) to put together a pedestal arrangement that would stand up by the altar during the ceremony. She used a mixture of flowers that perfectly matched our colour scheme, including Cherry Brandy Roses, Avalanche Peach Roses, sunflowers, eucalyptus and red Hypericum berries.

I was wearing my Sassi Holford Mia gown, which I had picked from their boutique in Taunton. My family moved to Somerset when I was 7 years old, and every time we went into Taunton I would make my mum walk me past Sassi's shop so that I could gaze at the gowns on display in the windows. My mum always used to tell me that one day I might be lucky enough to wear one of Sassi's creations, so to have this dream come true on my wedding day was one of the best feelings in the world.
The highlight of my wedding day was walking down the aisle in this beautiful church that I had been dreaming of getting married in for 20+ years, and seeing my husband waiting for me at the altar. He tells me that I pulled a silly face at him as I was walking towards him, and this helped him relax because he knew I was happy and at ease. I don't remember doing this, however!
After the ceremony, which was lead my the local vicar, a very lovely, warm, friendly and modern-thinking man, we had photographs in the churchyard. Our amazing photographers, James and Kerrie of James and Kerrie Photography wanted to get a shot of me and my husband with autumn leaves swirling around us. As there was no wind to make this happen naturally, they asked my sister's boyfriend to gently shake one of the trees around us to make the leaves fall and dance. This brings me to the second favourite memory of the day - my sister's boyfriend, suited and booted, hanging out of a tree out-of-frame of the camera, shaking this branch and making leaves fall down. It was very funny.
It was time for the reception! We held our reception at Old Oak Farm in Curry Rivel, a 15 minute drive away in my husband's Maserati Ghibli (saved us hiring a wedding car!), which we had decked out in ivory wedding ribbons. As we arrived, our friends and family were there to greet us and clap for us and welcome us.
The barn was decorated beautifully, both by Rebecca and Andy, the owners, and by me and my mum they day before! We had been pumpkin picking a week or so before the wedding and ended up with 50 pumpkins that we scattered around the barn and used to decorate. There were twinkly fairy lights, garlands of leaves and candles in lanterns. My Nan had knitted a load of pumpkins that we attached to a 3-foot wicker wreath for guests to help themselves to to take home as a little reminder of our day. This was a huge success; the wreath was picked clean by the end of the night! The lovely mother of one of my childhood friends had made us mini jars of honey from her own bees to leave on the table as favours. The beautiful, golden honey fitted in with our rustic autumnal theme perfectly, and it felt really good to be gifting our guests something local and home-made.
We had a crazy golf course, supplied by ParTee Time Mini Golf, set up outside of the barn to keep guests entertained, and it was a hit! We still have people talking about it now, almost a year on from the wedding. As it got dark, they switched on their festoon lighting which lent the course a really warm and inviting atmosphere. Luckily, we had also hired gazebos to go over the course as it did start raining later on in the evening.
Our cake was three tiers, made by a lovely lady who was recommended by a chef-friend of my mum's. She makes celebrations cakes on the side as more of a hobby, so takes on very few bookings each year. In-keeping with our theme, the top tier had been sculpted to look like a pumpkin! Each tier was a different flavour - white chocolate and raspberry, chocolate orange and pumpkin-spiced carrot cake.
Sallyann, the florist, had carried the theme of the pedestal arrangement through to the 3 foot top table arrangement, and she had also crafted some beautiful centerpieces that sat in hollowed out pumpkins.
The food at our venue was delicious - very fresh, seasonal and local and beautifully cooked. Our guests were offered a choice of roast beef, roast chicken or pumpkin risotto, followed by lemon and ginger cheesecake or sticky toffee pudding. We had many comments on how good the food was!
Ben Prescott was our DJ, and he put on a great disco for the evening. My husband and I had chosen the playlist ourselves, but we had told Ben to take out any songs that in his experience didn't really "work" at weddings/parties, and to add in anything that he thought would work well and get everyone dancing. Ben was just incredible and I never saw the dancefloor empty once he kicked off the evening!
Ben rounded off the party with the full 8-minute version of Don McLean's American Pie, followed by Taylor Swift's Getaway Car, and then it was time for the evening to wrap up. It was so emotional and lovely standing in the door of the barn at Old Oak saying goodbye to all of our friends and family who had come to celebrate our day with us. We feel so lucky that our amazing photographers captured the day beautifully so we can have lots of visual reminders of our wedding day. It was truly a very special day filled with love and warmth, and the memories are going to last a lifetime.
