29 Mar, 2025Our Real Wedding
We got engaged at a New Years party in 2024 - 12 years in the making! I already had a lot of ideas of how I wanted the day to look but no idea of a venue to put that on to. So came the search!
I knew I wanted lots of florals, in purples and whites as well as a good amount of greenery. I wanted rustic but also elegant, with a venue that fitted the theme. We found the Hovels after a lot of trial and error - perfect for us as it had a fantastic vibe. The glass in the main room made it feel light and airy even when it was raining. It was small but not too small, a cosy feeling that really came out on the night. Our decorator made the room look wonderful. I was worried about too much or too little and she really worked with me to make it look our own. I picked the flowers based on what I wanted and from pictures I'd seen of another wedding - our florist was so excited to bring my vision to life and the arrangements she made looked stunning.
I had the bridesmaids in purple as well, all their dresses were found online which was really conveniant - I gave a colour and a style and off they went! My own dress I found in the very first shop we went to, the seventh dress I tried on. It made it to the top two and then I knew it was the dress I would get married in.

Our baker was a dream, sitting us down for a tasting session and really making us feel at ease. In the end it was exactly what I imagined - and we will be eating it for a good while yet!
On the day the venue really went above and beyond. Everything went so smoothly. They cater in-house so it was one less thing to bring in. The food was to die for, from the smallest canapes to the three course wedding breakfast to the evening spread (though I got none of the evening grub, too busy dancing), all was so perfectly prepared and bursting with flavour. Unfortunatly gone before any photos could be taken!
All the little extra's on the day made it so special. The favours we put together ourselves. The personalised tissues. The audio guest book which got a lot of traffic throughout the evening and I can't wait to listen to again and again. The DJ playing the best of 2000s emo for all us die-hards. The lawn games, especially splat the rat, got a lot of use while we were zooming around having wonderful photos taken. Our photographer was a star, fantastic with candids and posed photos alike. The drone shots got us all in and he even managed to conjure a sunset on a cloudy day.
Overall it was a day of a thousand special moments, from first looks to vows to seeing old friends to dancing like the night wouldn't end. It really was one of the best days of my life. We couldn't have done it without the fantastic vendors we chose or the team at the Hovels. For some advice - shop around as much as you like and don't feel pressured to put down deposits. Always try the free samples. Trust your gut feeling. Make sure to take some moments to yourselves because it does go so quickly. Find accommodation close by and most of all, have so much fun!
