20 Aug, 2022Our Real Wedding
We knew what we wanted, outside, colour, sparkle, fun, and just very Us, and no pretension or rules. We hated the idea of being told where to sit, having loads of strangers around serving people and following the standard wedding rules (no bouquet toss, I’ve never wanted to wear white, and Matt only wears a suit for funerals).
We picked Powderham Castle as Matt has local links to it but also because it has the most beautiful castle that we were able to stay in over the wedding weekend but then the most incredible grounds.
When Matt first took me to see the American Garden, tucked away in a hidden corner we both decided immediately it was the place. It had nothing in it, except all the beautiful trees and the pavilion. But Matt and I work in theatre, and we knew we could definitely put on a show.
We had to bring in everything including power and water but it just meant we could decide on how everything was set up completely.
We have an amazing, then, 2 1/2year old, Gabe, he’s the centre of our world and we wanted him to very much be an important part of the wedding. Not hidden away and kept quiet. Plus lots of our friends have children, we wanted them to celebrate with us. For several younger ones it was their first wedding as they’ve always not been included before. So we made sure they were involved and had lots to do too. Games, a kids tent, the freedom of all that space and by the end of the night we had a collection of the most tattooed (temporary obvs.) children ever.
