31 Aug, 2024Our Real Wedding
We have been together for 8 years, most of it long distance between the UK and Switzerland. Paul proposed in December 2022 and we began planning our wedding at the start of 2023, whilst also house hunting in Somerset.
Our ideal venue was in Somerset, where I am from, that would accommodate us with different areas for each stage of the day. We looked at many venues in Spring 2023, but when we visited Brympton D'Evercy, Paul's face lit up. Saturday 31 August was the only Saturday they had remaining in 2024 and so it felt like fate. We booked immediately for a dry hire and got to work organising all of our other suppliers.
We chose a husband-and-wife team to cater our wedding who ran the restaurant we visited on our third date, before Paul moved to Switzerland. They focus on great local food and cooking outdoors on open fire which felt like a perfect use of the venue's grounds. We also sourced local Somerset cider and wine from The Newt in Somerset, where we got engaged.

As I come from a background in art and design, I knew I wanted to create our own invites and stationery. Whilst attempting to move in to our new home and make it ours, I spent night after night meticulously painting Brympton's South terrace, made of beautiful Somerset hamstone and endless floral borders, hoping to match the florals we had requested from the Brympton styling team on the day.
Paul took over much of the non-creative organisation and played to his work skills in contract law. He spent a lot of time with Brympton's tied-in suppliers, organising the lighting, sound and evening food and liaised with the wedding co-ordinators to ensure the smooth running of the day. He also organised the registrar appointments and, when our celebrant let us down, took control of how the wedding day legalities would play out.
Organising a photographer was equally challenging, having found many that we liked on social media, we were keen to organise calls and accumulate photographic styles that we liked the look of. Continuing with our husband-and-wife team theme from the caterers, we narrowed it down to wanting two shooters for the day: one to spend with Paul and his best men and a second to spend getting ready with my bridal team. Unfortunately, after extensive calls with not one, but two, couples who couldn't commit, we found the perfect match in the Le Sueurs, from Bath, who equally shared our love for our engagement venue and caterers. We are both awkward in front of a camera lens (I prefer to be behind it) but the Le Sueurs made us feel comfortable and like we were enjoying the day with old friends.
I had always wanted a Vivienne Westwood wedding dress, as she was one of my key inspirations when developing my own career in fashion design. I found the perfect Westwood gown, which only needed minor adjustments, so I chose to make the alterations myself in the weeks leading up to the wedding day. I felt every bit as good as Carrie Bradshaw trying on her dream gown!
I used Hitched to help find the perfect makeup artist, Justine, who welcomed me in to her own home for my day's trial. It was the fantastic reviews and her kind nature which shone through and helped me decide. Both the bridesmaids and my mum looked stunning and felt confident on the day. Equally, Hitched helped out when finding our cake maker, Holly, who was one of Brympton's preferred suppliers. Her 5* reviews outlined just how helpful and talented she is, and I was so lucky she managed to create all three tiers with a gluten free base: the first time I have ever been able to join in on wedding cake!
For the bridesmaids and bridesman, I wanted their outfits to show off their own unique personalities and creative careers, so we dressed them in mismatched summer florals. My bridesmaid boxes mirrored this too, with unique floral print pyjamas and individual perfumes to suit their tastes. For the groomsmen, we chose Liberty print floral ties and gifted them with some of Paul's favourite aftershaves.
Our incredible bouquets and button holes came from My Lady Garden, who created the most unique wedding flowers for us that we have ever seen. I loved how Paul's button hole had a hint of orange to differentiate him from the other 8 best men, ushers and dads, it looked perfect against his dark navy suit. The girls loved their bouquets too, which clashed beautifully against their dresses and stood out against our locally-sourced, meadow-themed floral displays around the house and gardens from Brympton's in house styling team, Style by Design.
The ceremony was conducted in the Medieval chapel at Brympton, where we filled the room with some of our favourite songs from The XX - one of our favourite bands we have seen perform live together. Paul bought the wedding bands using his inheritance from his grandmother, which made them even more special. Our furthest guest (my bridesmaid) and her husband flew over from Hong Kong, with Paul's colleagues flying in from Switzerland. My bridesman read the Hot Priest's wedding speech from Fleabag during the ceremony - one of the television shows that we first bonded over. We walked out to "All You Need Is Love" by The Beatles to be showered with confetti, before enjoying a glass of bubbles and being whisked away for photos in the orchard.
Despite carrying out the old wives' tradition of burying a sausage in the garden the night before for glorious wedding-day sunshine, we did experience some drizzle and so the wedding breakfast that we had planned on the terrace was moved indoors. It actually worked out even better than we thought, feeling cosy and intimate with candles lit. The caterers served local cured meats and cheddar cheese; spicy chipolatas from the fire, locally-sourced lamb and pork with fire cooked potatoes and a white chocolate and passion fruit pavlova for pudding, all washed down with cider and rosé.
For the evening, we partied the night away in the Party Barn, which went down a storm. Our first dance was to The Arctic Monkey's cover of Barbara Lewis' Baby I'm Yours. Paul sourced a great band, who played medleys of songs from the 60s to the present day. Our guests enjoyed fish and chips between dancing and managed to clear the cake platter!
The day went by so quickly, but we tried to take little moments together throughout the day to soak it up. It's really special having your friends and family together in one place and we were so happy our suppliers were able to help us create a memorable day with all our favourite food, drinks and music to share with our guests.
