10 Aug, 2024Our Real Wedding
We met back in 2018 through a mutual friend. However, our journey together didn't properly start until June 2019 when on our 'first date' we went for a lovely meal out to Bella Italia, with Tom forgetting a shirt and ending up wearing his cricket shirt from the day. This definitely has set the tone for our relationship. Full of laughs and fun.
We were engaged on 29th February 2020 when I proposed to Tom, well...my 2 girls did. They had created a short video clip telling him what they liked about him and asking him to marry their mummy, which I was then sat with a ring. Tom likes to tell this story differently, saying that he'd just sat down to eat a takeaway pizza after a long day, and the only way he knew he could eat his pizza was by saying yes!
We then moved in together on 31st March 2020, yes, just as lockdown hit. If there is ever a test to whether a relationship can last, being stuck together at home 24/7 is definitely a good test. But not only did we survive that, we came out stronger and in January 2021 we looked around our venue, Sissons Barn, and instantly knew it was the place for our wedding.
Continue reading »It all then went quiet for a while, with us looking at things, but feeling that it was too early to book too much (although we did get the photographer - Dan Waters Creative, booked in nice and early as I had met Dan previously and we knew that his energy was exactly the type of vibe we wanted our wedding to have).
When I went to choose my wedding dress, I visited Heart Brides, Ely. I had seen their social media presence and liked the vibe that I got from them, as well as several of the styles that they stocked. It was such a pleasant experience for me and my mum, nice and relaxed with plenty of time to try on a LOT of dresses before deciding on the one. When I put the dress on again on the day of the wedding it truly was the one, and I felt great in it all day!
We decided to style our own venue, flowers and decor to help keep costs down. This was definitely an experience, but I really enjoyed being able to put lots of our own personal touches into the wedding - the table names being Disney characters, the table plan being on cricket bats as this is one of Tom's passions.
Our cake was made by Nic's Home Bakes, who we've used for birthday cakes before and knew made delicious cakes. She did not let us down, with an incredibly beautiful cake which tasted equally good. 3 layers of custard cream, mint choc and lemon, with a separate coffee cutting cake, and 6 gluten free vanilla cupcakes to ensure all our guests could try some cake!
The day itself, our hair and make up professionals were amazing, their timelines worked beautifully and we were all ready in plenty of time. Except...one of the bridesmaids dresses was too big after losing weight since she had tried it on 5 months prior! So there I sat at a sewing machine putting darts in the dress to give it a more comfortable fit for her. Which then resulted in us being, slightly, late!
We arrived at the venue by horse and pumpkin carriage for a real princess feel, with The Ostler Horse and Carriage Company. A lovely ceremony in the outdoor space followed, with a blessing from the same Minister who had Christened both of my girls. The rest of the day passed in a bit of a blur, with an afternoon tea wedding breakfast provided by SimonPollendinePrivateChef, some miniature golf (thanks to Props 2 You), a bouncy castle (Lovley Entertainment), a Postbox Photo Booth (HDH Productions), a Hog Roast, a beautiful violin trio (Bow Fiddle) in the early afternoon and a band (Uproar) in the evening.
It was a really great day! One of my favourite moments was when we went on a tractor ride round the farm to get some shots with our photographer and videographer. It was really lovely to get that space and time to talk just the 2 of us for a while. We also got a snippet of time like this after the ceremony with the horses and carriage taking us from the gate round to the start of the confetti walk. These little glimpses of time really made sure that we got time for each other in amongst everything else and I'm sure they wouldn't have been so easy to find if we hadn't planned them in so I would definitely recommend this to couple's planning their weddings.
Honestly, now I'm just sat that it's all over. The day after the wedding we opened our wedding gifts, took all of the cash that we had been gifted to the travel agents and booked an All Inclusive trip to Sal, Cape Verde with Tui to leave 2 days later. That kept the high of the wedding going for an extra week and was a really lovely honeymoon and time to spend with each other before going back to normality.
