Q: What advice would you give to all our readers out there who are planning on popping the question and want to choose the perfect ring for their other half?
A: An engagement ring is an incredibly personal piece of jewellery which will, hopefully, be worn for a lifetime so it’s important to get it right. It may be safer to choose the engagement ring together – if your other half is particularly difficult to buy for – otherwise, look at the jewellery they already wear, the shapes, the metal colour, whether they like coloured or plain gems and so on.
This way, you can be sure to buy them something that will at least suit them and fit their personality. Goldsmiths work hard to provide as much choice as possible so that the perfect ring can be found.
Q: Many couples choose the engagement ring together – what advice would you give to brides who just don’t know where to start?
A: Don’t follow trends or think about what is fashionable. Pick a ring which you fall in love with. Engagement rings are personal, so you don’t need to worry about what other people are wearing. It’s also important not to rush. If you keep looking, you’ll see something eventually and know that it’s for you.
You could also draw what you like or use our new Ring Builder to create your own bespoke engagement ring. The Ring Builder programme has just launched on goldsmiths.co.uk and allows users to create the ring of their dreams.
Q: You have a stunning collection of engagement and wedding bands this season – tell us about some of the highlights
A: Within our Goldsmiths engagement ring collection we offer an extensive range of styles including design led, classic styles as well as certificated diamond. One of the main highlights for Goldsmiths this season is our Jenny Packham collection, where we have collaborated with the iconic British bridal design to create an exclusive range of bridal rings and jewellery.
We also have the Mappin & Webb collection for Goldsmiths. Renowned for combining timeless craftsmanship with superior quality and contemporary designs, our entire collection is crafted in platinum and is GIA certified.
Q: What about brides that want something different to the norm and want something other than a traditional diamond?
A: There are so many gems that can be used as the centre piece of your engagement ring other than a diamond. Precious stones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies are often used, one of the most famous engagement rings in the world – worn today by the Duchess of Cambridge – features a sapphire as its centre piece with diamonds around the edge. It is also possible to create a piece with a precious gem such as a ruby in the centre and use other red semi-precious stones such as garnet and red spinel around the edges if you want a particular colour.
Q: If a bride has an unusual shape of engagement ring, how can they find the perfect wedding band to match?
A: Engagement rings are often unusually shaped but it’s now relatively easy to find a wedding band to match. If you have quite a large centre stone or an unusual shape, it is often best to have the engagement ring raised so that your wedding band fits underneath. Alternatively, wedding bands can be moulded so that they fit below the engagement ring.
Q: Tell us more about your one of a kind ring builder?
A: We have launched our one of a kind ring builder as both engagement and wedding rings are such personal pieces of jewellery. With the ability to choose from over 200 settings and 23,950 diamonds you can be sure that you get the perfect shape, cut, clarity and carat. There is even the option to make sure that your diamond has a specific GIA certificate.
Q: You have a fabulous collaboration with Jenny Packham – tell us all about what you have to offer?
A: Jenny Packham has created a beautiful collection for us which includes three stunning bridal suites which are designed around a beautiful and unique engagement ring with complementing earrings and necklace pendants; Gloria, Aurora and Étoile. The collection of bridal jewellery epitomises everything that Jenny herself is known for: being a wonderful, iconic British designer.
Q: Do you offer bridal jewellery as well as engagement rings and wedding bands?
A: Yes. As well as engagement rings and wedding bands, Goldsmiths offer delicate necklaces and glimmering earrings which make perfect bridal jewellery.
