Mother of the Groom Outfits UK: Your FAQs Answered
Your most common questions about mother of the groom fashion answered by those in the know!
Where to Buy a Mother of the Groom Outfit?
If you’re looking for traditional mother of the groom outfits, check out specialist occasion wear designers such as Veromia, John Charles and Lalage Beaumont, while high-end labels such as Rixo and Suzannah are just the ticket for stylish investment pieces with a modern twist.
You’ll also find gorgeous mother of the groom outfits for over 50s in many of your favourite high street stores, including Phase Eight, Monsoon and John Lewis.
What Does the Mother of the Groom Wear?
There aren’t any hard and fast rules, but there are a few recommendations when it comes to choosing your mother of the groom outfit. First of all, be sure to choose something that’s smart and good quality – it’s a major family event, after all, and you’ll want to feel your best.
Secondly, consider the colour of your outfit. “Aim to complement the wedding party’s colour palette – not match it,” says Regine Ellis, creative director at John Charles. “If the bridesmaids are in lilac, for example, go for a rich purple accent.
“The type of wedding and the venue it’s being hosted in should also be reflected in your outfit,” she adds.
When Should the Mother of the Groom Buy Her Dress?
Plan to find your outfit shortly after the couple have chosen theirs – this ensures you’re aware of any themes you should follow and it gives you plenty of time before the wedding to have alterations made, if needed.
Can the Mother of the Groom Wear the Same Colour Dress as the Mother of the Bride/Other Groom?
Of course! There are no rules that state you can’t wear the same colour as the mother of the bride or mother of the other groom. The key is to make sure you’re wearing colours that don’t clash if you are opting for different shades.
Traditionally, the mother of the bride would buy her dress first, then consult with the mother of the groom who’d purchase an outfit to complement. Nowadays the rules are less strict – but we’d still recommend that you confer before the big day.
Can the Mother of the Groom Wear a Patterned Dress?
Yes, she can! In fact, some of our favourite mother of the groom dresses are patterned – as you'll see in our edit above. As long as your dress doesn’t clash with the wedding party’s outfits, you’re good to go.
Can the Mother of the Groom Wear Black to a Wedding?
Today black dresses are very much accepted for the mother of the groom. Black can be chic and elegant, and you’ll find lots of monochrome options available for those who feel more comfortable and confident in black.
As long as the couple are happy with your colour choice, there’s nothing to say you can’t choose a black outfit.
Can the Mother of the Groom Wear White?
It could be acceptable to wear off-white, if the couple are happy for you to lean towards a more neutral palette, however, it’s still best to wear this colour broken up with other colours to avoid looking too typically bridal.
Does the Mother of the Groom Wear a Hat?
If you want to wear a hat, then go for it! “For me, a hat is the eternal signature of glamour and a form of costume that gives you confidence,” says Regine. “A comfortable, securely placed hat will always look lovely.”
Is My Mother of the Groom Outfit Too Plain?
The mother of the groom outfit doesn’t have to make a huge statement if that’s not your usual style. There are lots of minimalistic but beautifully made pieces out there that are special enough to wear to your son’s wedding.
If you feel like your outfit is too plain, why not play around with accessories? Metallics like gold and silver are a fabulous choice for shoes and bags as they pair well with most colours, but livening your outfit with a fascinator or hat is also an option.
How Should the Mother of the Groom Prepare for the Big Day?
“I would highly recommend having your make-up professionally done on the morning of the wedding,” suggests Regine. “Bear in mind that you’ll be running around a lot on the wedding day – and there will be tears! So you’ll need to be prepared for touch-ups,” she adds.
