Barnett Hill Hotel, Surrey: Hotel Review

Barnett Hill Hotel is an idyllic spot for a countryside wedding or a relaxing mini-moon. We took a trip to the village of Wonersh to experience the Surrey retreat for ourselves...

It’s no surprise that more and more couples are choosing to tie the knot in Surrey. Thanks to its close proximity to London and the gorgeous Surrey Hills, it is bursting at the seams with beautiful wedding venues.

Up there with the best of the bunch is Barnett Hill Hotel, a country house wedding venue sitting just outside of Guildford in the chocolate-box village of Wonersh.

Barnett Hill has bags of class and charm (not to mention 26 acres of beautifully manicured grounds and gardens), so when we were invited to look around we almost couldn’t contain our excitement.

We arrived at Barnett Hill on a sunny Saturday morning, and from the moment we made our way along the winding private driveway, we knew we were going to feel right at home. That’s actually one of the things we loved most about this place – first impressions count and you don’t get much more impressive than the ones served up here.

Once we’d finishing taking (far too many) snaps of the beautiful exterior, we stepped inside the porch where wellington boots line the walls ready for residents to wear on their muddy countryside walks. Its small touches like these which really make every stay at Barnett Hill Hotel special, whether you’re there for your wedding day or a relaxing mini-moon.

Hallway

The contemporary entrance hall is the perfect backdrop for your wedding photographs!

The grandeur of the property continues inside, and from the gorgeous monochrome-tiled hallway (complete with chandeliers and window seats, no less), to the impressive spiral staircase, there is so much to love.  In fact Barnett Hill boasts one of the most Instagrammable of bridal entrance spots we’ve ever seen!

Sitting just off of the entrance hall are the venue’s restaurant, bar and function rooms.  We started in the Oak Room, a bespoke ceremony suite with wood paneling and contemporary chandeliers. It oozes elegance and has direct access onto the gardens – perfect for when you need to get to those post-ceremony drinks!

If you’re hosting a smaller ceremony, don’t fear! The Drawing Room is a smaller yet equally stunning space, which is suitable for up to 70 guests. It also has direct access onto the terrace, so you won’t be missing out.

Wedding Garden Suite

A wedding set-up to beat all wedding set-ups, in the venue’s Garden Suite

In the same order as you’d enter the rooms on your wedding day, we then popped through to The Garden Suite. It’s the largest of the function rooms at Barnett Hill and boasts views over (yep, you guessed it) the property’s beautiful gardens.

We were surprised by the amount of natural light which flooded the space through the gorgeous original windows, and although the room has recently undergone some refurbishment, it was lovely to see the original features were all still intact.

Courtyard

The Courtyard looks particularly stunning at dusk

After taking our tour, we were shown to our room for the night. There’s a wide selection of rooms available at Barnett Hill, and each space is individually and stylishly decorated. Ours was a plush Master Suite, just perfect for loved-up newlyweds.

The suite boasts awe-inspiring views over the peaceful gardens, the comfiest bed we’ve ever stayed in and a luxurious free-standing bath. It didn’t take long for us to put our feet up on the sofa and totally relax.

Oh, and don’t get us started on the bathroom. The rainfall shower? Heaven!

If you need us, we’ll be here…

If you’re after something even more luxurious, treat yourself to a stay in Master Suite 43. We were treated to a sneak-peek and can vouch for how palatial it is. Not only is it a whopping 50 square meters, it has its own separate lounge area, a flat-screen TV, a workstation, in-room refreshments and books and magazines to get lost in.

Head inside the bathroom and not only will you find a dual vanity unit with towelling robes and slippers, but you’ll be able to enjoy complimentary L-Occitane toiletries! Another lovely touch.

Talk about the perfect place to unwind…

After all of that hard work, we were feeling parched and peckish – just as well the venue has its own award-winning restaurant and bar.

The 1905 Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy some pre-dinner or wedding breakfast drinks with plush furnishings and even more garden views. With an extensive cocktail menu, range of spirits and a carefully considered wine list, it’d be rude not to tuck into a tipple (or two).

The 1905 Bar

The restaurant itself is cosy and intimate with a roaring log fire as the centerpiece. What a perfect addition to your winter wedding breakfast!

Every dish we tried at Barnett Hill was delicious and fresh, all thanks to the team’s dedication to using only the best, local produce. We’re not sure whether the highlight of the meal was the Camembert, the beautiful steak or the mouth-watering chocolate desserts… Perhaps we can tuck in again to make our minds up?

Fish

Impress your guests by serving this delicious fish dish at your wedding breakfast!

Breakfast at Barnett Hill was a similarly relaxed and delicious affair. Whether you fancy eggs Benedict or a hearty full English to kick-start your day, you’ll be served promptly as you mull over the happenings of the biggest day of your life with your loved ones.

We’re guessing you won’t be in any rush to leave after your wedding… in fact, we’d be staying around for a good couple of days after.

Follow in our footsteps and chat to the team about the endless countryside walks from the hotel – they are more than happy to help! Our favourite took us through fields into the centre of Wonersh, where The Grantley Arms was the perfect spot for a warming mug of hot chocolate. What’s more, Guildford is only a short drive away – you might fancy taking to the shops for some honeymoon treats!

Back at Barnett Hill, the restaurant comes alive on a Sunday lunchtime when roast dinners are served to delighted hotel residents. For something a little sweeter, Afternoon Tea is served every day consisting of an array of delicious cakes and sandwiches. You can even book yourself a treatment in one of the beauty rooms as the most idyllic way to unwind!

Dragging ourselves back to London after such a wonderful weekend in our new home-away-from-home was difficult, to say the least. Barnett Hill, we’ll most definitely be back.
