Can a Pub Become a Wedding Venue in the UK? Expert Advice

If you're wondering "can a pub hold weddings?", then the answer is yes! Pub weddings have been massively on the rise over the past few years, so if you've ever considered turning your pub into a wedding venue, now's the time. And good news - it couldn't be easier.

Any pub can easily become a wedding venue. The first and most important thing to do is to apply for the correct licenses, which can usually be done through your local council. Usually this will just be a marriage and/or civil partnership licenses.

Now you've heard all of our tips, it's time to hear from the experts. We asked Georgina, the Weddings & Events Supervisor at The Ferry House in Kent, and Grace from the team at The Cadogan Arms to answer some of the public's burning questions about pub weddings - here's what she had to say.

How Much Does a Pub Wedding Cost?

"All weddings vary in cost", Georgina explains, "but averagely will start from £5,050 for an intimate celebration."

Meanwhile, the team at The Cadogan Arms say "this really varies depending on the number of guests, time of day, day of the week, month and duration of booking.

"We do offer weekday wedding packages starting from a £2,000 minimum spend, as outlined in our brochure. For smaller celebrations (excluding the ceremony), we do on occasion offer the Rose Room minimum spend free.

"For example, it would be a minimum spend free on Mondays - Saturdays from Jan to March 2025 at 12pm, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm for two and a half hour bookings."

Depending on the pub you're planning to book, you can always discuss different packages with them to find the best fit for your budget.

How to Decorate a Pub for a Wedding Reception?

"Our pub is full of character with beams and hops through out, so not much decor is needed," Georgina explains. "But it is of course always lovely to see couples adding their own unique styling to their day to show their personalities.

"We would always recommend lovely table decor, using runners and flowers for your wedding breakfast and foliage arches for the end of your ceremony really give the wow factor."

The team at The Cadogan Arms say, "‘our pub has such a stunning interior adorned with chandeliers, artwork and the recreation of Georgian architectural details, that many guests choose to keep the decor fairly understated.

"Additions that they may use to help organise include: flowers, linen, bespoke menus and place cards, and candles. We have had the occasional guests go all out with ice sculptures and champagne towers."

What to Wear to a Wedding Reception in a Pub?

"We find guests dress very slightly less formal," advises Georgina. "Most of the time, ladies will attend in dresses or co-ords and the men either in a lighter suit, or chinos and a shirt."

Of course, you should always refer to the dress code on the invitation first for guidance on how to dress, but researching the venue can be really helpful.

Can a Pub Become a Wedding Venue in the UK?

"Yes, they are able to become licenced for ceremonies," Georgina confirms.

"We actually have two separate ceremony areas, our Oak Barn and our Oak Gazebo, we then offer your reception to take place in our pub."

The team at The Cadogan Arms explains, "‘we completed an Application for Approval of Premises for Marriage Ceremonies and Civil Partnership Registrations.

"This was sent to Kensington and Chelsea Register Office at the Chelsea Old Town Hall. The Chelsea Town Hall have been a brilliant support for us."
