What Makes a Wedding Venue Unique?
There are several factors that can make a wedding venue stand out from the crowd. Location can definitely play a part, especially if you want a striking backdrop for your wedding photographs. Coastal wedding venues, vineyard wedding venues and landmark wedding venues are all great ways to achieve that 'wow' factor.
Architecture can also play an important role in choosing your unusual wedding venue. Whether it's a quirky art gallery, a rustic barn venue filled with exposed beams or a minimalist event space, a building's design can play a huge role in helping a venue make an impression.
Some venues may offer amenities such as swimming pools, private gardens, treehouses, tipis or fire pits that can be a big draw for couples seeking something different. More creative couples may be looking for a blank canvas venue, so that they can personalise it and make it completely unique to them.
There are many different things that can make a venue unique; however, the most important thing to bear in mind is that what makes a wedding venue unique will depend on you and your partner's preferences. It's your day and you should have it your way, so feel free to get creative when it comes to choosing your venue!
Wedding venue owner and CEO of the Gilchrist Collection, Samantha Gilchrist, explains what couples should consider when it comes to determining if their wedding venue is unique – and it's not just about what the venue looks like:
"When it comes to what makes a wedding venue unique, there are a few things I'd encourage couples to think about:
- Photo spots: Let's be honest, it's great having amazing grounds, but if it rains all day is there anywhere unique inside the venue for your photos? A sweeping staircase? Beautiful fireplaces? Then outside, look for little nooks, different features and amazing landscapes for incredible images. This, for me, is a big part of what makes a wedding venue unique, as you can recognise some venues from their beautifully designed features (inside and outside!) alone.
- The staff: Feeling like the staff care about you and your wedding is the most important. This is who you are trusting your wedding with, and it needs to seem like it's unique to them.
- Dedicated getting ready spaces: This is one of our USPs, it's in all of our venues. A dedicated room where you can get ready and have those gorgeous getting ready photos with you and your crew.
- An area for night time photos: Something like a cute secret garden or a light feature at the venue, where you can have some romantic photos in the dark or a sparkler exit is always special."
How to Find Unique Wedding Venues?
So you've decided that you want to find a more unusual wedding venue – where do you start looking for it?
"Use a trusted wedding venue directory," says Kathryn Tye from The Biscuit Factory. "You might have a venue in mind already, but using a trusted directory like Hitched can open your mind to new and unique venues you didn't know existed. Spend some time exploring, in case your first choice isn't what you expected."
Attending wedding fairs is a great place to discover new venues and suppliers you may not have heard of otherwise. It may also be the perfect place to find your unique wedding venue, according to Megan Elsegood from The Pumping House. "Head out to as many wedding fairs as you can," she says.
"It's also a good opportunity to meet suppliers that have worked all over the country. These will be the best people to give you advice on the venues they have worked at and loved. If you chat with lots of photographers they may even have photos for you to take a look at."
Overall, think creatively when trying to find a unique wedding venue. Think about what you want your day to look like and include, and narrow down places that can help you bring that vision to life.
