Striking and vibrant, a sunflower wedding bouquet is a go-to choice for nearlyweds who want to make a bold statement with their wedding flowers.

If you desire to add a pop of colour to your bouquet of flowers, sunflowers can add the perfect finishing touch to any wedding arrangement, with their majestic, enchanting look.

Characterised by their bold yellow petals and striking brown centres, sunflowers as wedding flowers naturally become the focal point of any bouquet. Sunflowers at a wedding symbolise positivity, energy, and loyalty - qualities that are foundational in marriage.

The flower's name itself is actually derived from its characteristic of turning towards the sun, which can be seen as a metaphor for a couple's commitment of always looking towards light and positivity.

One of the key advantages of selecting sunflowers for wedding bouquets is their undeniable versatility. A sunflower wedding bouquet can complement various different styles of weddings, including rustic barn settings, chic outdoor ceremonies or even more formal indoor events.

Their distinctive golden hue pairs beautifully with a range of colours, including earthy tones, romantic pastels or a bright and bold palette.

Whether you’re envisioning a timeless bridal sunflower bouquet, a dried sunflower bouquet or even an artificial sunflower bouquet, this classic yellow flower is guaranteed to elevate your handheld arrangements.

Sunflower Wedding Bouquets: Expert Tips

Still have some questions about sunflower wedding bouquets? We spoke to expert florist Lianda Phillips at Juniper Flowers who told us everything you need to know:

What Makes Sunflowers Stand Out From Other Flowers?

“I think what sets sunflowers out compared to other flowers are their bright, bold appearance and contrasting petals to centre.

“Their size also means that they stand out from the rest, sometimes literally so. Smooth petals and soft, almost fluffy centre contrast perfectly against each other.”

Which Season Are Sunflowers Best For & Why?

“Sunflowers are the perfect summer flower! Their season runs throughout the summer months, so that is when they're at their most perfect.”

How Many Sunflowers Would You Usually Include in a Bouquet?

“The number of sunflowers we would use in a bouquet would solely depend on the size of their heads.

“The larger the sunflower, the less stems we would need to create impact in the bouquet, they tend to speak for themselves and take centre stage!”

How Much Is A Bouquet of Sunflowers?

“The cost of a bouquet of Sunflowers again, depends on how many stems we use within the bouquet.

“Larger varieties such as ‘Sunrich Orange’ and ‘Teddy Bear’ tend to need less stems to make a bouquet impactful, whereas smaller headed varieties like ‘Sonja’ need to be used in larger numbers to create visual balance within the bouquet.”

What Does a Sunflower Mean in Marriage?

“Sunflowers symbolise adoration, loyalty and longevity- which are three important words when it comes to a wedding. They are also assumed to symbolise fertility and optimism too.”

How Do You Make a Wedding Bouquet with Sunflowers?

“Sunflowers work best in a hand-tied bouquet, where they can be angled and anchored securely. Sometimes if a head has grown at a slight angle, they need to be manipulated slightly to sit where we need them to be.

“My favourite complementing flowers to use alongside Sunflowers are traditional ‘cottage garden’ flowers, such as: achellia, delphiniums and astilbe. This gives a beautiful, natural effect- echoing how the flowers would all grow together naturally in a garden.”
