Mexico has a hugely diverse landscape, from snowcapped mountains and sweltering jungles hiding ancient ruins to arid deserts with only cacti for company. One thing you’ll find everywhere is tequila, delicious food and any excuse for a fiesta.

The beaches are afforded almost legendary status for the breadth of underwater life, while terra firma boasts more Mayan ruins than you’ll be able to visit. What you can’t miss are the hidden cenotes (natural freshwater sinkholes you can swim in); ask a local to recommend the best.
Where to Go in Mexico
For history, the Yucatan peninsula is home to the magnificent Mayan cities of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, plus fun Caribbean resorts stretching down to Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. For excellent beach resorts, try Baja California in the far northwest (an exceptional whale-watching destination) and Puerto Vallarta on the West coast.
To avoid the crowds, try the off-the-grid Oaxaca Coast. Beaches here are near empty, bar nesting sea turtles, wildlife-filled lagoons, dolphins and whales. Inland the scenery turns to heavily-forested mountains and cities with a vibrant arts and crafts scene.

When to Go to Mexico
That dream blue sky, cloud-free, sun-filled Mexico weather is best found from December to April. Avoid spots like Cancun in March and April when it’s full of American college students on Spring Break – unless non-stop partying is your vibe.
The rainy season runs from May to September, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad time to go. The rain normally comes short and sharp in the late afternoon and the rest of the day is bright and sunny.

What to See in Mexico
Don’t miss the hustle and buzz of Mexico City. The capital has some of the most adventurous and best chefs in Latin America: book in for a special meal at Pujol or Quintonil.
After stuffing yourself, spend a lazy day exploring the unmissable museum dedicated to Mexico’s most famous daughter, Frida Kahlo, or take a street art tour. If you can align your visit with the Day of the Dead celebrations at the beginning of November, you won’t regret it.

The Cape, Cabo San Lucas
Every room at The Cape commands a stunning view and overlooks the famed arch-shaped rock formation of El Arco. With the only rooftop lounge in the area, there’s a fun, urban vibe at night to this cool, contemporary luxury hotel; during the day, it’s all about soaking up the sun.

There’s no less than eight highly-regarded restaurants at the JW Marriott so foodies will be in their element. Swim it off in the lagoon-style infinity pool, or – heck, it’s your honeymoon! – keep up the indulgence at the adults-only pool’s swim-up bar. This tropical paradise even has its own artificial coral reef for divers.
CasaSandra, Isla Holbox
Owned by a Cuban artist, CasaSandra is exactly as rustically luxurious and colourful as you’d expect. It’s the perfect base to explore the vast Yucatán Peninsula, brimming with ancient Mayan ruins, azure beaches, wildlife watching and charming colonial towns.

A world away from the huge all-inclusive resorts, Belmond Maroma has a distinctly Mexican feel to it, from thatched roof palapas on the beach to local artwork splashed around the whitewashed buildings. How to Get to Mexico
You can get direct flights from the UK to Mexico City and Cancun, although you’ll find indirect flights stopping in Europe or North America will save you money. Miami or Los Angeles are great stops to pick to do a twin-centre honeymoon. A direct flight takes about 11.5 hours.
