What to Write in a Valentine's Day Card

You might be wondering what is a good Valentine’s Day message to send? From sweet and sentimental to simple and funny, how do you know what to write in a Valentine's Day card?
As well as giving you examples of Valentine's Day card messages for every recipient, we also have bags of advice on what kind of message to write.
The key is to know your audience and consider the kind of relationship you have with the person you're writing to.
If you're writing a Valentine's Day card for a friend or new girlfriend or boyfriend, you won't be reciting seriously romantic poetry quotes or declaring your undying love for the card's recipient.
Likewise, if you're wondering what to write in a Valentine's Day card for a husband, wife or fiancé, your message is likely to be more romantic and heartfelt.
What is a Good Valentine’s Day Message?
It's important to match the style of message to the type of relationship you have.
If you and your partner are a pair of jokers who don't buy into romance much, you'll want to write a funny Valentine's Day message that matches your relationship.
If you know your partner's love language is words of affirmation and sentimental validation, you'll need to dig a little deeper and come up with something more than a "Happy Valentine's Day Babe!" to avoid missing the mark.
A good Valentine’s Day message should be personal, heartfelt and thoughtful. Consider the following elements when writing your V-day message:
- Personalisation: lean into specific qualities they have or memories you share
- Sincerity: write from the heart and be honest about how you feel
- Tone: depending on your relationship, you can go light and sweet, or deep and emotional
To ensure you nail your Valentine's Day card message, we have a number of examples as well as top tips to help you out. Happy writing!

Pro Tips for Writing in a Valentine’s Day Card

- Check the card - make sure the message is appropriate for the recipient! You don’t want to send a sexy card to your bestie and a generic card to your partner
- Think about whether to use the L-word - if you haven't said it yet, think about if you want to choose this moment to say it for the first time, or whether you'd prefer to say it in person.
- Make it personal - if you’re not sure what to say, refer back to a special memory you both share and start from there
- Don’t think you have to write an essay - sometimes, less is more
Who Wrote the Oldest Known Valentine's Message?
From writing to your ex, to sending love letters from prison - hear us out on this one. History-lovers will be interested to know that the oldest known Valentine's Day message was actually sent from behind bars. The first ever Valentine's Day message was written by Charles, the Duke of Orleans in 1415.
Charles' first marriage took place when he was just 12 after he was ordered to marry his then 17-year-old cousin and daughter of King Charles VI, Isabella of Valous, who was already a widow having been married for the first time aged just six.
After Isabella died in 1409, Charles married for the second time, this time to an 11-year-old named Bonne of Armagnac. In 1415, during the French civil war, Charles was imprisoned by the Burgundians.
It was behind bars in the Tower of London where he penned the first ever Valentine's message to his wife, though the tone was more sombre than today's style of message, and the relationship dynamics were inappropriate, to say the least... He wrote:
"My very gentle Valentine,
Since for me you were born too soon,
And I for you was born too late.
God forgives him who has estranged
Me from you for the whole year.
I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine."
Unlike the Duke of Orleans' work, ensure your Valentine's Day message is packed full of romance by using some of the world's most romantic quotes in your card.
