This Is Who You Should Pick as Your Maid of Honour, According to Your Star Sign

You’re getting married – hooray! Once you’ve called everyone in your phone book and flashed the ring to anyone who so much as glances in your direction, one of the first jobs on the list is to pick your bridal party, and in particular, your maid of honour.

It’s a big job, and so you’re probably planning on picking your longtime BFF, or your nearest, dearest female relative (sisters are a popular choice for a reason), and we’re definitely not here to talk you out of that – after all, only you know who you want walking down the aisle with you on your big day. But have you ever stopped to wonder how compatible the two of you are when it comes to wedding planning – according to your star signs, at least?

So we spoke to Carolyne Faulkner, founder of dynamicastrology.com, author of The Signs: Decode the Stars, Reframe Your Life and Your Stars: An Empowering Guide to the Year Ahead, and basically, general legend in the world of horoscopes right now, about how you might get on…

Pisces: February 19 – March 20

Best Maid of Honour: Leo or Aries

Pisces are generally quite dreamy and free-spirited, and as Pisces and Aquarius often attract each other as friends, you might be tempted by an air sign maid of honour.

“You’ll have a wildly out-of-this-earth experience if an Aquarius and a Pisces work together – but you need someone to balance it out or it will all be very conceptual, and you’ll still be coming up with ideas a week before,” says Carolyne.

So, who can prevent you from making endless Pinterest board plans that never make it off the screen? “Fire is very good at actualising ideas – Pisces is the visionary artist, but you need someone who can actualise all of that.” So if you’re a typically romantic, imaginative Pisces, your Aries or Leo friends might be the best people to turn to help you turn your wedding dreams into a reality.

Aries: March 21 – April 19

Best Maid of Honour: Aquarius

Aries and Aquarius, however, are the perfect match when it comes to astrology, and that applies to wedding planning too. “They have a really strong karmic connection with each other, and they would serve each other,” says Carolyne.

“When you’re looking for a maid of honour, you’ve got to have someone who is going to make you the centre of attention,” she adds. Aquarius will be there for their Aries friend to do just that. Forget a maid of honour who’s more concerned with their hair and make-up than yours – Aquarians’ easy-going nature will make sure their Aries bride remains the star of the show throughout the process.

Taurus: April 20 – May 20

Best Maid of Honour: Gemini or Cancer

“Taureans are really multi-skilled and talented; it’s in your nature to organise and put things together,” says Carolyne. If you’ve already got your colour-coded wedding spreadsheet system underway, you’ll know what she means. But when it comes to your maid of honour, Taurean bride, you could do with someone a little looser to liven things up, like a fun-loving Gemini, or a generous Cancer.

“Cancer would work well with Taurus because Cancer has the ability to put service above all else. They wouldn’t give a hoot about ego – and this stuff does come up,” she continues. As for who you should avoid when it comes to bestowing the honour of head of your bridal party? Carolyne says it’s another Taurus ­– “because you’d both be vying for the leadership position.”

Gemini: May 21 – June 20

Best Maid of Honour: Sagittarius

Geminis have lots of brilliant qualities: you’re outgoing social butterflies who love excitement, and what could be more exciting than planning a wedding? However, Carolyne also describes Gemini brides as “bendy” – “so when you’re around people that aren’t telling the truth, you’ll get caught up in it,” she explains. This amenability could easily lead you into mistakes like buying a dress you’re not a totally happy with just to please others, or booking a venue because someone else says it’s nice.

It’s for this reason that Sagittarius is a great maid of honour pick for you: “Sagittarius is super blunt and to the point and honest.” If you’re a Gemini who’s easily influenced by other people’s opinions, “a Sagittarius will shoot you in the eye (metaphorically, of course!) with the arrow, get to the point, and get it done”.

Cancer: June 21 – July 22

Best Maid of Honour: Virgo

If you know a fellow crab, you’ll already realise that Cancers are sensitive souls by nature. While this makes them compassionate and loving to the max, and great friends in general, when they’re planning a wedding, Carolyne says it can also mean that they’re one of the signs that are most prone to having meltdowns.

So, to hold you together when you feel like going to pieces, Cancer brides should look to their nearest, dearest Virgo. “Virgo has the capacity not to take things personally,” she explains. “Cancer, when they’re getting married, can be overly emotional and defensive. Virgo has the ability to be quite clinical so they won’t get caught up in it all.” Basically, you can always count on an earth sign pal to help you stay grounded.

Leo: July 23 – August 22

Best Maid of Honour: Aquarius

Let’s not beat around the bush: Leos crave the spotlight. This normally makes you come across as confident and likeable, but we’re sorry to say it, Leos, you might find yourself leaning a little towards bridezilla territory when you’ve got a big day to pull off.

“Aquarius works quite well for a Leo bride because they see through the facade to the goodness of the Leo’s heart, rather than getting swept up in their drama,” Carolyne says. “You don’t want anyone who’s going to upstage a Leo – you want to have someone who has the ability to work with compassion. A lot of times when people want everything to be about them, it’s because they’re actually quite insecure.” A loyal Aquarius friend will support you from proposal to altar, and shower you with the kindness (and compliments) you need to make it to your ‘I do’.

Virgo: August 23 – September 22

Best Maid of Honour: Gemini

“Virgos are brilliant with attention to detail – they’ll have prepared for every kind of eventuality, have tons of lists, be sending out 15-page emails that nobody really reads,” says Carolyne. She suggests a Gemini maid of honour for you, because you both have the same ruling planet, Mercury, which means you both have a gift for communication.

“Though you’re on different planets, you’re coming from the same one,” she explains. “Gemini would bring out the more fun side of Virgo (great for times when you need to let loose, like the hen do), and they also move on very quickly. The thing with Virgo is they can be very cutting and critical, but adaptable Geminis will get over that in about 20 seconds, whereas someone like a Cancer would be nursing those wounds for years.”

Libra: September 23 – October 22

Best Maid of Honour: A Squad

This might seem excessive, but Libra is ruled by Venus, and because of this, your standards are usually sky-high (Kim Kardashian is a Libra, if you need a benchmark for the levels of perfection we’re dealing with here). “You’re going to need makeup artists organised, the place needs to look incredible – the expectations Libras have are going to be way too weighty for one person,” says Carolyne.

Even though you’ll probably want to still pick one maid of honour to lead the way, she recommends Libra brides have their girls work together, with a combination of earth fire, water and fire bringing all of their best traits to the mix.

Scorpio: October 23 – November 21

Best Maid of Honour: Capricorn

Scorpios crave depth and longevity to their relationships above all else: “Scorpio is looking for total commitment, whether it’s your maid of honour or your husband or wife,” Carolyne says. “Whoever takes part in your wedding has got to commit 110 per cent, otherwise you’ll never forgive them; a Scorpio holds a grudge like no other.”

So, which of the signs is up to the job? “I would go with a Capricorn,” Carolyne says. “Capricorns, when they’re working well, are the most committed and diligent and dutiful and responsible of all the signs.” Capricorn will support a hardworking Scorpio in whatever wedding tasks they take on head on, and lead them down the path to success.

Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21

Best Maid of Honour: Libra or Aquarius

Ever had a problem with budgeting, Sagittarius? According to Carolyne, “Sagittarius can have a tendency to overindulge – if you have a budget of £50,000, you’ll spend £30,000 on flowers,” she says.

Teaming up with a Libra can help you to navigate this issue: “Libra would help to make everything look and feel opulent and beautiful, and make everything a bit more balanced for their Sagittarius bride.” Your other option is a more analytical Aquarius: “They have really good ideas, so they’ll say, ‘If you’re spending £5,000 on this, why don’t you spend £3,000 on something else?'”

Capricorn: December 22 – January 19

Best Maid of Honour: Capricorn or Cancer

“Capricorn, you’re the boss lady of the zodiac, so you’ll probably end up doing everything yourself and getting exhausted,” Carolyne says. “It’s tough for you to hand the reins over to anyone; it would be more a case of tactful delegation.”

“A Capricorn would work well with a Cancer or another Capricorn, but the other Capricorn would need to be a bit older,” she details. “Capricorn is all about respect, so you might even opt for a mother figure or an aunt. You’ll probably be most comfortable sharing the load with another Capricorn because you can see your own traits reflected in them.” Just make sure to pick someone; otherwise you’ll burn yourself out micromanaging everything and everyone.

Aquarius: January 20 – February 18

Best Maid of Honour: Pisces

“Speaking generally, Aquarian brides are not really high maintenance,” says Carolyne. You’re not very materialistic or showy, you just want to have a good party –  and Aquarians are popular people, so no matter how relaxed you are, you’ve got whole eclectic armies of friends who will make sure everything is done.

“The thing is, Aquarians are like cats; they always tend to land on their feet. It looks as if everything is absolute chaos and then all of sudden something spectacular is pulled together magically – you can bet your bottom dollar that your wedding will be off the Richter scale,” she continues.

Anyone with an Aquarius friend will probably be nodding their heads in agreement, but Pisces put extra care and attention into everything they do, so they’ll be the perfect people to make you feel special and come up with surprises that even your most innovative pals might not have come up with otherwise.
