Good afternoon Ladies and Gentleman. This is the moment you've all been looking forward to and ive been dreading
Now before I start for those of you who don't know me my name is Adam ‘would you like a drink’ Jeffs and if you could all remember that later when you see me at the bar that would be great!!!
First of all I'd like to thank you all for coming…especially you Julie the day really wouldn't have been the same without you.
Of course I have to thank everyone on behalf of Steve and Julie who has helped today to run so smoothly. first the staff here at the hotel who have been brilliant. Then the Bridesmaids, Katie and Karen, who I think you will agree look beautiful and have done a great job.
In fact the only person looking more stunning is Julie herself.
now as you have probably guessed I am Steve's son it is true what they say..you really cant choose your parents. Believe me I've tried to take him back but they said they could tell he'd been used
I was really worried when dad asked if I would be his best man as there's so much involved.
First off you have to arrange the stag do, which for those who were there I like to think I didn't do a bad job of. I arranged an activity day at Knowsley Safari Park Centre, involving shooting & 4×4 driving. We were split into teams, where dad performed to his usual high standard, being beaten by a team called the Fat Scousers well they were at home soil dad.
Then it's the best mans responsibility to make sure the groom turns up on time. Now I'm not saying my dad is always late but we did tell him the wedding was on Friday.
Then of course we come to the main event, the speech. There's so much pressure and expectation with this, I really didn't know where to start and I must admit I was worried about messing up. But then I thought the chance to share in this happy occasion, to show my approval and, most importantly, to be in the same room as Julie and talk for 3 uninterrupted minutes was too good to miss!!
It was really difficult to know what to include. Usually the best mans speech is just a thinly veiled excuse for a character assassination on the groom. But obviously as its my dad I wouldn't do that.. would I daddy
So, with a copy of his will lodged safely with my solicitor I thought id tell you all a few things you may not know about him..
Firstly, its become apparent from talking to his friends that Steve was a keen cyclist before he met Julie… at least I think that's what they meant when they said he was always into bikes!!
Then there's my dad's well know talent for DIY, one the main reasons im sure for them buying a brand new house that needed nothing, absolutely nothing doing to it.
I'm convinced that was Julie's decision not Steve's. Dad is never happier than when he's knocking a few nails into wood… and then paying a professional to knock em back out again and do it properly.
I think it's obvious to everyone, though my dad will never agree that Julie wears the trousers in their relationship. In fact it was only a 50/50 toss up that she'd be the one turning up in the dress today.
On a more serious note, all I do know is that of all the time I've known my dad, first as a parent and, now that I am older, as a friend, I have never seen him happier than he is with Julie. They are obviously very much in love and I have no hesitation in wishing them a long and happy life together.
With this in mind I would like you all to stand now, and dad its probably best if you have your hand on top of julies as this is without doubt the last time you will have the upper hand in this relationship.… And raise your glasses. To the bride a and groom, to steve and Julie Jeffs
