Speech Creator: John McMillan
Speech Date: Nov2006
Firstly, I would like you all for coming to celebrate the marriage of Mathew and Nicki here today, and remember marriage is not just a word but a sentence to pause, a life sentence.
Joking aside, for everyone that doesn't know me my name is John, and those who do I am really sorry.
And I'd like to thank Mat for asking me to be his best man, and putting me through the wonderful build up of waiting to deliver this speech. The last time I was this nervous was when I was waiting for his brother Rob to get a round in!
I would like to start by saying a big “thankyou” to the bridesmaids for today, as you will all agree they have done a marvellous job and all look fantastic.
Indeed they are only eclipsed by Nicki herself, who I'm sure you'll agree looks stunning today pause, and Mat who just looks stunned!
It has been an emotional day today and you'll notice even the cake is in tears.
Now a bit about Mat:-
Mat was born in Leicester on the 3rd of March 1973.He is a Scum ,sorry Man united supporter.Which reminds me you can have your Man united stamps back mate-I didn't know which side to spit on.
.He shares his birthday with a few famous people.
Firstly, from Mats favourite boy band “Boyzone” we have Ronan Keating.
The famous inventor Alexander Graham Bell- whom Mat idolises and took it upon himself to also invent things- pause his favourite inventions are his stories to Nicki about the previous night!
And finally the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh- who is really sorry he cant be Ear today touch your ear at this point.
I can remember Mat from the age of 8 , and 25 years later here we still are as best mates.
Mats always been a competitive little blighter and like me will remember the final year at junior school. It was then that we both competed for the boys athlete trophy , which comprised of several events, with points from each one.Anyway you wouldn't believe it but it was a draw between us both-but to this day you will still here him winge saying he should have won outright.all because a teacher placed him wrong-or so he says!
Likewise last years top scorer trophy for Scunthonians football team that we both shared ,which again Mat disagrees with the final goals tally and thinks he won that outright as well! And he played midfield!
But seriously hes been a cracking player and I keep trying to tempt him out of retirement to play for me on a Sunday-but at the minute his Golf is his priority.
Now onto a few stories about our nights out.
I can remember us going to the Baths Hall when we were 17 and new they were strict on under age drinkers. Therefore we made the effort and wore shirts and ties to look older.
”Yes a result” we got in.
Then walked into the hall area like cocky lads that we were.Only to discover it was a heavy metal and Scar night and everyone was in jeans and bikers gear. Our Jaws dropped and we felt like little school kids-anyway the ties were off and in our pockets and we made the most of it.
Mat loves his jokes too- ranging from the time we all had an Indian.” and the bill arrives.Mat goes to the loo and doesn't re-appear.He only climbs out through the small window and legs it for us to pick up the tab.
On holiday we shared a room with his brother Rob. After a heavy night Rob was fast on in the morning, I was awake-but Mat was busy on the balcony pause only catching a praying Mantis.
He quietly approached sleeping beauty Rob and placed it on his chest ,then gave him a gentle shake. After a few seconds Rob came around and seen it- you can picture the the rest..
Another one of Mats party tricks would be on walking between pubs, stick his head in the Romantica restaurant and yell- “Which one of you ladies ordered the stripper”.He would do this every week to the Italians annoyance.
There was a few stories out of very many, the rest stay between us!
Mats a very lucky man and Nicki deserves a good husband… thank God you married her before she found one..
Now that leads me nicely onto the cards from family and friends that couldn't make it today:
To Mat and Nicki- hope you had a great day-I am over the moon for you both:
Yours Neil Armstrong
Read out a few other cards
You two will make a magnificent married couple for many years to come , and I am very proud to have been a part of your special day. With all my heart I hope you two have a long and happy marriage.
Ladies and Gentleman, I now ask for you to join me in a toast ……..… To the Bride and Groom, Mathew and Nicki, Mr. and Mrs. Town
