Speech by Leslie Stoddart

Hi, Your sample speeches were are great help when I made this Best Man's speech last year, I'll definately be back next year when I need to make a Groom's speech! One tip for delivering your speech which I found particularly helpful was to hand-write your speech using a different colour pen for each section. I found this very easy to follow and also because I made two or three drafts of the speech I found that when I came to deliver it already knew most of it off by heart. Thanks again Leslie

Speech Type: Best man
Speech Creator: Leslie Stoddart
Speech Date: oct 2004
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, and I use that term loosely as I know that some of the guests today are from Fife!

For those of you that don't know me my name's Leslie and as well as being David's Best Man, I'm also Chari's big brother. For those of you that do know me….… Well I'm sorry!

Anyway, I'd like to start traditionally and thank David on behalf of Shona and Gill, our lovely bridesmaids, for his kind words. And can I say what a great job they've done today and how wonderful they both look. And I think that you'll all agree that Chari looks like a million dollars. As for David, well he looks like a million Lira…… about 43 pence! Not forgetting Gavin and Kenny our two ushers and Sam, the ring-bearer. However I'm not too happy about the fact that they copied my outfit for today.

Secondly I'd like to thank my mum and dad and Mags and Tosh for the wonderful hospitality we've received today. It's been a truly wonderful day and one we will remember for years to come.

You know I'll never forget the night that David asked me to be his best man. It was the night that Dundee knocked Falkirk out of the Scottish Cup at Dens Park in Dundee. So not only did I have to travel home with the disappointment of getting beat, but with the dread of making this speech. Thanks for that David!

In trying to prepare for this speech I read a book about weddings. It said;

The Aisle – the longest walk you'll ever take
The Altar – the place where two become one
The Hymn – the celebration of the marriage

I think that Chari must have read the same book because I'm sure that I heard her whispering today, “I'll alter him, I'll alter him”

I also had a look on Tinternet for some facts about the 4th of July. On the 4th of July 1776 the American Declaration of Independence was signed. However, I think a much more interesting fact is what happened on the 4th of July 1934. That was the day that the famous Alcatraz prison accepted its first inmates. Young men were taken away from their families where they led a life of solitary confinement from which there was no escape. They were endlessly tortured, humiliated and basically forced to do whatever their masters wanted. I'm sure that when Chari picked today for the wedding it was a complete coincidence.

Now it's traditional for the best man to embarrass the Groom and every given opportunity. With this in mind I asked David's mum, Mags, if I could have some embarrassing pictures of David to show around. She came up with one of him sitting on his play mat in his nappy with felt tip pen all over his face. I didn't actually bring it as I thought it was just too embarrassing. After all, it was only taken last year!

I'm sure that most of you are aware that David is a DJ and he has recently been given his own show on Kingdom FM. Now I hope that David is using this as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. I'm pretty sure that is what he's doing because let's face it, no one really wants to work in Fife do they?! Seriously though, I think that David is destined for great things in radio and let's be honest folks, he's got the face for it!

At this point of the speech I'd like to ask Chari and David to take part in it. Chari, can you put your hand flat on the table. Now David place your hand on top of Chari's. David I want you to really enjoy this moment because it will be the last time you ever have the upper hand.

At this point before I move onto the cards, I'd like propose a toast to absent friends. Absent friends.

Cards

I inserted these two ‘joke’ cards in amongst the genuine ones

To Chari, we could have made a great couple. From Robbie Williams
To David, we could have made a great couple. From Robbie Williams

And finally on behalf of the Bride and Groom, I'd like to thank you all for sharing their day. I started planning this speech about a week ago and you must fell like I've been delivering it for as long. But now it gives me immense pleasure to invite you all to stand and raise your glasses in a toast to the Bride and Groom. Chari and David.
