Speech by Mark Jones

Hello Dont know if you are still taking speeches but just in case here is mine for the wedding of my brother in law in february 2003. I must say that without the excellent help from your website and the fantastic sample speeches I would not have had a clue. To say the least I am not a public speaker, in fact I have managed to avoid any form of public speaking for 35 years both at work and on a personal basis. One piece of advice is the same as many others have given which is practice aplenty, i learnt the speech over a month or so, re-writing as i went, eventually it becomes second nature, th

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, for those who don't know me my name is Mark and unfortunately for you, today, I am Paul's Best Man.

To begin with I would like to thank the Bridesmaids Jess and Emma, I am sure you will all agree they both look lovely and have done a grand job today, well done ladies.
And I'd like to thank the Ushers, Rowan and Lloyd for their splendid work, nice one lads.
Last but not least I'd like to thank you all on behalf of the Bride and Groom for being here and sharing this special day.

It is customary for the Best Man to drag up some embarrassing stories from the Grooms past and to carry out a character assassination.… But out of respect for Paul on this big day I'm afraid I'm not going to.

I'm not going to mention the time he streaked down the road wearing just his slippers and a tank-top, unfortunately he met a Number 38 bus coming the other way, he still hasn't explained why he streaked, Paul ?.… one for the bar later I think.

I also wont mention the night we celebrated Jessica's birth, Paul got so drunk that he spent 5 hours talking to a toilet, his exact words escape me but I seem to remember him slurring “never again, never again” …even to this day I am not sure if he was talking about drinking or becoming a dad?

And of course I would never mention his fascination with combs, brushes and mirrors, can anyone here think of a time when Paul has managed to walk past a mirror without grooming himself,… no,… me neither.

And onto the The Stag Do

Luckily for all of us Paul decided to organise the daytime entertainment on his stag weekend, he was to arrange a visit to the Bass brewery in Burton, of course we never actually got to Burton, this confirmed what many of us already knew,
Paul couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

Well that's enough about Paul.

Myself, I have been lucky enough to be married for.… what seems like forever and would like to pass on some advice to Paul to keep the marriage running smoothly:

Remember, marriage is more than just an 8-letter word, it's a sentence.… you get less for murder.

There are 3 rings in a marriage:
The wedding Ring
The suffer Ring
And the endu Ring

The best way to remember your wedding anniversary is to forget it once!

And finally Paul, always remember these three magic words,

YOU'RE RIGHT SUE

You will be glad to hear that as Best Man I only have a few more things to say,
Firstly the staff at The Risley Hall Hotel have asked me to request that, for Health and Safety reasons, none of you get up on the tables and chairs during my standing ovation.

I would like to say to Paul it has been an honour and a privilege to be your Best Man today, and to say how lucky you are to have married Sue, you have found someone loving, caring, smart and… a match for you any day of the week,… And Sue you have found… well… just Paul.

Finally it gives me great pleasure to invite you all to stand and raise your glasses to Paul and Sue as I am sure everyone here today would like to wish them both good health, happiness and a wonderful life together.

To Paul and Sue
