Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I would first like to thank you all for coming today and helping to make Darren and Christina's wedding such a special occasion. Personally, I wish you'd all stayed at home and relieved me of my pre-public speaking anxiety.

In case you don't know me, I'm Pete, Darren's best man.

The venue is spectacular, the ceremony was very special and everyone looks lovely.

Christina, you look spectacular and Darren, well, we tried our best!

OK. I'd like to provide a disclaimer – should you injure yourself in any way when climbing on the tables or chairs at the end of my speech to give me a standing ovation, I can be held in no way responsible for your actions.

Firstly its part of my official duties of the best man to thank Darren on behalf of the bridesmaids for his kind words and for having them play a part in this really special day!

I first met Darren almost 10 years ago when I started as an apprentice panel beater. We clicked straight away and although we basically live on other sides of the country now we have managed to stay good mates and I was honored when he asked me to be his best man.

Having accepted the role, I'm pretty happy with the way things went today. From a best man's perspective, everything went smoothly. For starters, I got him here on time, which is a miracle as I'm hardly known for my punctuality!

He also arrived sober…ish! An achievement not to be underestimated! And most importantly, in a time of economic uncertainty, I successfully resisted the urge to post the wedding rings to Cash For Gold and do a runner, well done me.

Let's applaud Darren for his appearance today; he looks very fetching in his kilt and I know he's worked hard to stay in shape for the big day. In fact, for a long time now, Darren has observed a strict daily fitness regime. Every day he locks himself in his bedroom and raises his heart beat to double its usual rate for at least ten minutes, while vigorously working specific muscle groups. I think he got the idea from a fitness article that he read on the internet, because the habit first started just after he got broadband.

Courageous, loyal and caring, is Darren, and he has found his match in Christina. She is, without doubt, the most loving, giving, honest and kind woman he could possibly have hoped to end up with.… and I know you are probably waiting on a punch line, but this time there isn't one, I mean every word…

How he landed her I have no idea!

For those of you who know Darren and Christina well, you'll know how genuine and nice a couple they are, every time you visit their house you are always greeted with a warm welcome, and that's not from one of the dogs humping your leg! They are the most down to earth people I know and would do anything for you.

I would like say again what a great honor it has been to be Darren's best man today, I'm glad that after all these years he has finally admitted that I am the better man!

Now it gives me great pleasure to ask you all to raise your glasses to some very important people, without them today would not be the same, would you please raise your glasses to toast…The bar staff!
