Speech by Alistair Syme

Speech Type: Father of the bride/groom
Speech Creator: Alistair Syme
Speech Date: Jul2007
On behalf of Mary Pamela's mother and myself I would like to welcome everybody here for the occasion of Pamela &amp Graeme's wedding.

And I would like to say a few words of thanks before we build up to the main event, the best mans speech.

I'm just the warm up act then we move onto Graeme -who only has to get his opening line right and finally Stephen, the main event – who assures me his speech is a belter.

So I think the agreement between myself and Stephen was that I would say few thoughtful words about Pamela and he would generally slag Graham, or was it the other way about?

So to start with I would like to say a few quick thanks

Drew / Rhona etc

Carol etc

Mary – for her part in Organising
And mostly to Pamela/Graeme – for not involving me in any of the organisation and allowing me to take a complete backseat

The only part I have had to do was
turn up
dip into the wallet a bit
and say a few words

On a personal note I would like to thank Graeme for a great Stag weekend in Barcelona.

And Graeme definitely put my name down for your next stag night.
Now as some of you may know Pamela's became part of my life through her mother, When Mary and Pamela and moved to Fife from their spiritual home in Ayrshire.

Pamela moved to Cupar as a young girl and I would like to think I paid a part in her growing up to be the charming, beautiful bride you seen in front of you today.

I was there for some of the traumatic and tearful events of her young life

The tears, when her first Schoolgirl crush went horribly wrong.
The disappointment on finding out Stephen in Boyzone was gay
And the ultimate tearful disaster
When Robbie left take that I was also there for some of the major milestones in Pamela's teenage years

Now Pamela might keep in quiet now but at the age of 14 I took here to her 1st football match, bought her football shirt, scarf etc and unlike most supporters whose allegiance is based on history, family, religion etc Pamela's football allegiance was all based on the most selective of criteria
“Good looks”

and while she might not want to admit it now:
But the “Hearts” scarf and Paul Ritchie posters are still in the Cupboard.

Now most of you here today will know Pamela as the beauty therapist she is today

However not many of you will be aware of Pamela's initial work experience at ******** of St Andrews, for those of you who don't know St Andrews, ******is a Ice cream shop come Cafe

Now prior to then Pamela had never shown any indication of being capable of applying herself to hard work and she was like a typical teenager, more interested in boy bands, boys than anything involving any work and it was with some trepidation that myself and Mary heard about her weekend job at ***** in St Andrews.

In fact both myself and mary, thought the shock of hard work would be to much for Pamela and she wouldn't last a week but she applied herself and ******** could not praise Pamela high enough and she worked there throughout her later school and college years.

In fact, it was at Luvians that Pamela initially met Carol and they became work colleagues and friends and here were are many years later with carol as the brides maid today.

I still bump into ******* occasionally at the Coop in Cupar and he still says that Pamela can scoop a mean ice cream cornet and Pamela if you fancy a career change there is always a job for you.
Now during Pamela's formative teenage years, we used to sit for many hours watching TV together and discussing the world's problems. During these hours together she introduced me to a cult figure whose thoughts and wisdom have influenced millions throughout the world.

Indeed a man who can be said to represent traditional family values and who has grown into one of the most recognised figures of the 21st century.
A man Pamela proudly compared me with Mr Homer Jay Simpson

So I would like to offer some thoughts to Pamela/Graeme, inspired by the big man himself as they embark on the adventures of marriage

To Graeme
When you take part in sporting events, it's not whether you win or lose:
it's how drunk you get.&quot

And Graeme always remember

The three little sentences – that will get you through life.

Number one, ”Cover for me”.
Number two, ”good idea boss”.
Number three, ”It was like that when I got here”.&quot

And Finally always remember the two most important words in the English language

“Yes Dear”

To Pamela

Always remember

It takes two to lie,
One to lie and one to listen
And now, If I could ask you all to be upstanding and to raise your Glasses and to the newly married couple

To Pamela &amp Graeme
