In any type of entertainment show you have the “star turn” or “top of the bill.” They are always on last. Me? I'm first. I am what's known as the support act.

Today is a very proud day for us all, and for Carol and me in particular. It is every father's wish to walk down the aisle with his daughter on her wedding day and today I have done that with Sarah.

I would like to thank you all for coming to help us celebrate this outstanding occasion- the marriage of Sarah and David. We have people ranging in age from under one to ninety-one. Yes! That is you mum!  We have people who have travelled from as near as Luton to as far away as Norway. Thank you all for coming. Thank you.

There is one person who would have loved to have been here today. My dad, Sarah's grandad, became very ill and died a few years ago. He would have been very proud of today. Look! He's looking down on us now smiling with approval.

I would like to welcome David to our family. When David told me he would like to marry Sarah, I thought “Great.” Another Luton Town supporter in the family.

There is one question I have always wanted to ask David. It is the same question all fathers ask their prospective son-in-laws and I would like to take this opportunity to ask it now if I may.

“David, do you promise to take care of and look after Sarah's shoes?”

Carol and I have not lost a daughter, we have gained a shoe-free tidy house.

I would like now to move into my football theme. When Luton Town appeared in the F.A. Cup Final in 1959 that was a good match. I was there. When England won the World Cup in 1966 that was a great match. I was there.

Today we have in Sarah and David the perfect match. Would you please join me in toasting the happy couple. SARAH and DAVID.
