Speech by John Proctor

I delivered this speech/poem at my Son's wedding, I included a lot of traditional Scottish slang in it. It went down very well.

Speech Type: Father of the bride/groom
Speech Creator: John Proctor
Speech Date: 18/07/2013 01:39:50

I'd just like to say a few words about Julie and Jack
And after I've finished, we'll have a wee snack

I felt a bit nervous about what I would say
On this grand occasion of their wedding day

So I said to myself, just relax, take your time
Then I discovered I was talking in rhyme

This is just about some of the things that they've done
So sit back and listen, it's a wee bit o fun

When this young couple started their romance
It wisnae the usual like goin’ to a dance

They went tae Edinburgh, but not for a luncheon
They spent the afternoon goin’ round a dungeon

Their next big date was a sight to be seen
‘Cost they both got dressed up and went for their Hallow'een

Then a while after that we all went for our dinner
And that's when I said to Jack, “you're on to a winner”

And while ah was usin’ ma knife and ma fork
The talk drifted round to goin’ to New York

Well, they went to New York later on in the year
And they had a great time there, just wait till you hear

One night Jack said to Julie, do you fancy going to the Empire State?
Julie said, “aye Jack, that would be great”

So he said that's fine, it's not very far
So he gave her the bus fare and he stayed in the bar

No, no, that's just a joke
Cause Jack is really quite a decent bloke

No they went there together full of delight
But as it turned out, they picked the wrong night

Oh they got there ok, but if the truth be told
They didn't stay long because o’ the mist and the cold

Undaunted, they went back again the next night
And this time things worked out just right

‘cause when they got to the top Jack got down on one knee
And Julie thought to herself, “Oh glory be”

Jack glanced up, saw the look on her face
And said, “What's up wae you, I'm just tying ma lace

No. that's just another few words spoken in jest
They won't mind, ‘cause they're two ‘o the best

No, Jack really did get down on one knee, and what he said was,
“Julie darlin’, will you please marry me?”

When Julie said “yes” Jack felt as though he could sing
Well, if she'd turned him down he'd have been stuck wae a ring

After they got home it was all systems go
There's a lot to be done as you very well know

The church, the guests, arrangements to make
And I just can't wait to get a bit of that cake

And that just about brings us to where we are now
And in just a wee minute I'll be taking a bow

They've come a long way from that very first date
And I'm sure you'll agree, they're both looking great

There's Jack, and I'm sure you can gather
He's a good lookin’ guy, just like his father

And on this special day he makes a handsome groom
And beautiful Julie just lights up the room

So I'd ask you once more if you'd raise up your glass,
To a wonderful son, and his bonny wee lass
