I've had one and a half years to prepare something and I ended up getting this off an Australian internet site James sent me this morning, I've not read it yet so Iet's hope for the best.
Good Afternoon everyone. For those of you that don't yet know me, my name is Nick, however I'm much better known as “Hollys Dad” wherever I seem to go. I understand it falls to me to do the opening speech and figure that if I do a poor job it can only help James and Rob who are to follow. I would like to begin by welcoming you all today and saying a big thank you from all of us on this table for taking the time and effort to join us to celebrate Holly and James's wedding. We know that many of you have made long journeys to be here today and we hope you have a great time throughout the day.
I guess now is the time I'm supposed to embarrass Holly and James with some stories. Well while I'm not going to do that I would like to tell you a quick story about one of their first encounters.
It was late one night and they were standing, facing each other. First James looked long into Holly's eyes, And then Holly looked deeply into James's eyes. Each knew exactly what the other was thinking And then Holly said those three memorable words. “That's him officer”
You may find it hard to believe but I made that up for a cheap laugh and James says it didn't really happened like that at all.
I believe it is now customary to spend a few minutes talking of the qualities of James our new son in law. I had 2 pages of notes but I'm sorry. I just can't make out his writing. Other than that “what happened in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam”
Regarding Holly, what can I say? She is a star, apart from being an unbelievably mardy baby she has grown into a lovely chirpy and wacky daughter. She's always been hardworking, full of love with an enviable thirst for life. Who could ask for more? Well James I guess for a start.
Now regarding the bit of wisdom, while I'm not really someone you should trust or take too much notice of there are these couple of snippets;
To James – A great philosopher once said, a man who gives in when he's wrong is a wise man: a man who gives in when he's right….is married! And three key phrases to learn are – “You were right all along”, “I was wrong”, and the most important – “OK Just buy it”
To Holly – Holly please never start a sentence to James with “Can you just”, and when you want something from James, just ask for it – he's a man and hints won't work!!
I would now like to say how happy Karen and I are to welcome James, Pat, Dave and Rob into our own family and look forward to our future together.
I would also like to say how pleased I am to have James as a Son in Law and proud to have Holly as a daughter and what an honour it was to walk her down the aisle today. I wish them all the very best in their new adventure.
It is now my very great pleasure to propose the first toast to the happy couple. So could I ask you please be upstanding and raise your glasses to the Bride and Groom, Holly and James.
“The Bride & Groom everyone!”
