I wrote the speech a week before the wedding and practiced it for about an hour every day until the wedding, in which alterations I made while practicing improved it. I also knew it well enough to deliver it without notes. My advice to any father or brother of the bride is as follows. 1. Make sure the speech is about your daughter and the love you bear her rather than falling into the trap of making a long string of canned jokes.
