Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Rob and I'm Sarah's Dad. Firstly I would like to welcome you all and thank you for being here to make Sarah and David's day more special and I hope you have a great day.

Absent friends I know there are those in our thoughts who can't be here today, family and friends who have watched you both grow and would have loved to be here to share your happiness, and I know they would be as proud of you both as we all are. So will you please raise your glasses to absent friends and family

If I appear a bit nervous it's probably due to this suit……… As some of you will know when Joe and I went to try on suits, the assistant gave me trousers 2 sizes too big….… then asked if the jacket was ok and could I raise my arms, I could, but not before the trousers had ended up at my ankles. …………Not the best way to introduce yourself to your in-laws, standing in a crowded store without trousers. Joe and Mira saw a new side to me that day…………..but you'll be glad to know I invested in a belt for today.

Thanks Occasions like this don't just happen by themselves, so I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way, the bridesmaids Kirsty, Jenny and Abby, the best man Darren, but especially Margaret for keeping me sane during all the preparations

Sarah Every father looks forward to the day when he can stand here and tell lots of embarrassing stories about his daughter…………sort of pay back for all the tantrums in supermarkets, teenage strops and school parent's evenings that made us cringe……………..”Are you worried yet Sarah?”…………… But now it's here seeing her grown up and looking beautiful all I feel is overwhelming love and pride ……..… However!

I hope David knows what he's let himself in for because as a child Sarah was prone to mistakes of identity, Sarah loved swimming and on one holiday she reluctantly left the pool and dressed only in swimming costume and a towel angrily stamped her way back to the cabin, opened the door, demanding to know what was for tea and stormed in …………to the wrong cabin…..… Where a puzzled family wondered who this angry child was.

A few years later she had arranged to meet me in town and seeing me waiting to cross the road she grabbed an arm and marched across the road….… only to find at the other side the arm belonged to a total stranger,……………… the poor guy probably didn't want to cross the road anyway!……..… She made it worse by saying “oh Dad I thought it was you but it was a wee Chinese man“………..

She is a real people person and would speak to anybody.  One summer whilst sitting out the back with a drink Margaret and I had noticed Mormons were knocking on doors so we decided it would be easier to just not answer the door, Just when we thought we had got away with it Sarah appears at the back garden with 2 smartly dressed men and shouts “Mum the moomins are here”……… (Moomins being 80s cartoon characters)

Growing up Sarah always had a knack of getting away with murder..… It didn't seem to matter what she had done, with a flash of her cheeky smile and dimpled face……yes that one…… She would manage to get her own way.

Whilst learning to drive one day she approached a roundabout planted with shrubs and didn't brake, but ploughed straight on, seconds later shocked and speechless I was looking out at a jungle as high as the car, …..But all she could do was smile and say “woops”

As her Dad the best way I can describe her is with the words of the song  “when my little girl is smiling” When my little girl is smiling There's nothing more I can say, I see those big bright eyes, and then I realise that girl is going to get her way When my little girl is smiling It's the greatest thrill there can be, She gets her way, it's true, but I know I won't be blue As long as she just smiles for me……….

Well hopefully she will be smiling for David now, and for the rest of your lives.

David ————————- At this point it is traditional to welcome the groom to the family but the truth is David has been part of the family for so long now he is like the son we never had.  So thank you to Mira and Joe for sharing their wonderful son, anyone who picks us up and drives us to the pub can‘t be too bad! —————————–  Advice Remember that in your future life together there will be times when you love each other and time when you would love to murder each other …..But with all the pressures of modern life it is easy to forget what is really important. I would urge you to always make time for each other and make time for your marriage, it is bigger than both of you… and at the end of the day it is the only thing that matters.

Toast and so a toast. Here's to your past – for all that it taught you here's to your present – for all that you share and here's to your future – for all that you look forward to together Ladies & gentlemen, Please raise your glasses. To…Sarah and David, Bride and Groom
