Speech by Roger Brooks

Speech Type: Father of the bride/groom
Speech Creator: Roger Brooks
Speech Date: Jul2007
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of my wife Alison and I, I would like to welcome you all and thank you for coming to this very special occasion with us to celebrate the marriage of our eldest daughter Sandra to Eric.

Sadly I am not a very practiced speaker – anyone with 3 women in the house will know that trying a get any words out is virtually impossible.
Firstly, I would like to say what a pleasure it is to welcome Fred and Maria, Eric's parents, along with his brother Mark and sister Margaret and of course all the friends and relatives of both families some of whom have travelled a very long way to be here.

A big thank you also goes to Sandra &amp Eric who had very definite ideas on how they wanted today to be. Their thoughtful planning and tireless efforts they have made today a tremendous success for everyone.

It is traditional now for me to tell you something about Sandra. It was however at this point when preparing my speech that my grasp of the English language failed me completely I am afraid !

Alison and I are very proud of Sandra and pleased to see her looking so beautiful and happy today – but it is tinged with a little sadness.
Those who know me, being generous does not come naturally. It phased me a little in the ceremony when I had to give Sandra away, I am a business man and giving away anything is not easy !

I never imagined that the pleasure of making a speech at Sandra's wedding would fall to me. When she asked me to give her away I made a joke of it, but deep down I was really touched, and it has been an absolute privilege to do this today.

During the time we have known Eric we have come to realise how special he is to Sandra.

It is the norm for me to offer Eric some advice at this point – I found a simple quotation which I felt was apt for his new role in life as a husband

– marriage is a 50/50 partnership –
– I could not find out who made this statement
– but whoever it was knew little about marriage
– even less about mathematics
– and nothing at all about women.

I would like to take this opportunity to formally welcome Eric to our family.

My final duty and very great privilege is to propose a toast to our daughter and new son-in law.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me as I wish the bride and groom all the happiness in the world. The Bride and Groom.
