Speech by Nick S

Speech Type: Groom
Speech Creator: Nick S
Speech Date: 11/08/2015 17:37:18

Firstly I would like to thank my new father in law for his kind words and good wishes.

I am of course a little bit nervous…this is the first time I've had to make a Groom's speech.

Now as is custom, there will be a few toasts during my speech, so please don't neck the whole glass at the first toast…mentioning no names *Cough*Antony.

I'd like to start by saying a big thank you to everyone here today. You have all helped in making today so special. We are genuinely touched by the effort and expense you have all incurred in joining us here today, and on behalf of my wife and I…..I'd like to say a big thank you for all our lovely cards, gifts and well wishes.

Unfortunately, it's not been possible to have everyone here today for various reasons. So, with them in mind, would you all please join me in our first toast, to absent family and friends.

*To absent family and friends*

You will see you're all on a table named after one of our favourites places which we visited whilst travelling together. The 16 months spent away were some of the most enjoyable times of our lives and we wouldn't be the couple we are today without them. I cherish every moment I spent with Nicky in some of the most amazing places in the world. Even a certain moment on the golden gate bridge after Nicky had had a few too many glasses of wine!

Most people would agree that being in each other's company 24/7 for such a long time would be a huge test for any young couple (yes I'm still young, don't let the grey hairs deceive you!) and I think everyone would agree that we passed with flying colours.

Now, we have a fair few thankyous to the people who have helped make today possible.

Firstly Nigel and Sylvia…

I'd like to say a personal thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms and for helping to make Nicky the woman she is today.

Nigel, I'm sure you never envisaged your daughter marrying a Manchester United fan…but I feel that you're gradually coming to terms with it.

Sylvia, you look beautiful today and I'm going to say the stereotypical “I can see where Nicky gets her good looks from” but it's true, you look lovely. . I'd personally like to thank you for giving Nicky the push to start dating me 4 and a half years ago after I had asked her out. . It felt like I was waiting for a response for hours! But after she showed you a photo of me, well, you must have known then and there that I was going to be your future son in law!

On behalf of my wife and I……I would like to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout our relationship as well as in helping us create this fantastic day.

As a token of our appreciation please accept these flowers.

Mum and dad…

Dad, thank you for managing to hold off from giving a speech…most of us know how much you love being the centre of attention and I'm impressed you've managed to restrain yourself today!…I will however give you this one moment in the limelight. Thank you for making me the man I am today, giving me the support and motivation to achieve my goals in life. On behalf of Nicky, I would like to thank you for welcoming her into the family as the daughter you never had.

Mum, I would just like to say how beautiful you look today. You are the most hardworking fantastic caring Mum to Antony and I and I know just how proud your parents are of the family you have made.

On behalf of both Nicky and I, I'd like to thank you both for the endless love and support you give us as we build our life together. I am proud to have you both as my parents.

As a token of our appreciation please accept these flowers.

And on that note I would like to make a toast to loving Parents.

“To loving Parents”

Right, to the bridesmaids…..

I'm sure everyone will agree just how elegant you all look today.

Helena, I still can't get over some of those hilarious videos of you and Nicky whilst you were at university, you two have such a special friendship. Becka and Anna, thank you for supporting Nicky, and for your years of friendship. And for organising with Helena, what looked like a great hen do weekend. I'm sure everyone would love to see some of the dance moves you learnt later on!

I'd also like to thank you for all the help you have given Nicky in organising today and for keeping her relatively calm for the last 24 hours or so!

Thank you also to our ushers, Antony and Alastair. They have done an excellent job as ushers, especially the way they searched handbags and frisked pockets on the way into the church with such discretion. Antony, I can't believe how many places you have now been to now and the experiences you have had and continue to have. Thanks for the personal reading you made earlier and for inspiring Nicky and I to travel around the world. Alastair, you have been a great friend for a long time and I feel honoured to have you as part of our wedding.

I'd also like to thank the best men and ushers for abiding by the unwritten rule not to look as good as the groom…which has come easier to some of you than others!

Ladies & Gentleman, please raise your glasses in toast to our Bridesmaids and Ushers.

*To the Bridesmaids and Ushers*

I'd now like to talk about the person who made today possible,

Who would have thought that after we first met 9 years ago that we would be here today as a married couple. I can only imagine how different our lives would have been if you had decided to continue your masters….and I hadn't stalked all your photos on Facebook! It did however take me a while to get over that evening when you couldn't watch the whole of one of my favourite films, Black Hawk Down, due to boredom, and when you rejected my moves underneath the stars, but in the end I guess we just couldn't resist each other.

I'm sure you will all agree that Nicky looks absolutely beautiful today and I stand before you now, a very proud man indeed. When I saw you walking down the aisle I was blown away, I then looked at myself and thought wow…..I'm definitely getting the best out of this deal!

You are the most amazing woman, and ever since we first started going out I knew we had something special. It's not very common for a couple to book a 2 week road trip after only being together for a month… we were definitely committed from the start! I'm so lucky to have found someone I get on with so well…the feeling of happiness I get when I am around you cannot be described. It's an absolute honour to call you my wife.

Now, being a Scott we all know that it isn't just a case of being beautiful and intelligent that can win our hearts over, you have to have a strong personality and be able to cope with our stubbornness …something I have in abundance. They say you don't marry someone you can live with – you marry the person who you can't live without and I think that sums us up perfectly. The rest of my life will be that little bit more special having my very own fiery red head by my side. I love you so much.

Now I'd like to take some of the credit for putting together such an amazing day, but everyone would know I'd be lying. You have done an incredible job in organising your (I mean our) wedding!

So please can I ask everyone to raise your glasses for the most important toast I'm ever likely to make, to the woman that made this all possible – to my beautiful wife Nicky.

“To Nicky!”

And last but not least, to the best men…

Adam, or as you prefer to be known, Big Pommo, thanks for being a great friend over the last ten years and providing me with endless amounts of laughter. Life on Jersey really wouldn't be the same without you.

Ben, is it really almost 9 years since we started University? After the endless amount of hours drinking vodka, clubbing and playing video games, I still can't understand how we managed to find time to get through our degree! You have been a great friend and its shame it's not easier to meet up more regularly.

I'd like to thank the both of you for organising a great stag do….I truly feel that I will never walk alone with the friends that I have. And so comes the final toast of my speech, to the best men.

*To the best men*

Before I hand over to Ben and Adam to make an even bigger fool of me, I need to make you aware that they both strangely and unfortunately suffer from the same rare medical condition that makes them prone to exaggeration.

If you need help identifying who is who, Adam is the smaller one with the receding hair line…over to you Pommo!
