“I wanted to share some reasons why nerds and opera singers are a good match” – Maid of Honour Speech by Bethany

"We first met in chamber choir at Portland State and I remember thinking, not fair! That b*tch gets to sing soprano and I'm stuck in the alto section."

Speech Type: Maid of Honour
Time to Read Aloud: 4 minutes
Our Favourite Line: “Both nerds and opera singers have big hearts, loyal friendships, and their own interests. They know how lucky they are to have found their Princess Leia and their Alfredo.”

I wanted to start off by thanking James and Emily for inviting me to be a part of their special day. For those of you who don’t me, my name is Bethany and I’m the maid of honour, matron if you want to get technical.

Emily and I have known each other for nine years. We first met in chamber choir at Portland State and I remember thinking, not fair! That b*tch gets to sing soprano and I’m stuck in the alto section. Story of my life.

Emily and I know more about each other than we probably care to. We’ve laughed together, cried together, and have inside jokes that only we find funny. We’ve been there for each other through some of the hardest times in our lives and have been grateful to experience some of the best times together too. We’ve learned how to adult together. I’ve had the opportunity to watch her grow, change and evolve into the wonderful woman that sits before us today, and I am honoured to call her my best friend.

After Emily and James’ first date, Emily told us all about how great he was and how fun and relaxed their date was. I remember thinking, I hope this guy deserves her. I wanted so bad for her to find someone that really appreciated her sense of humour, how crazy smart she is, and how truly beautiful and caring she is. The more I heard about him, the more I wanted to like him, but I wasn’t sold. I think what really won me over was his Ghostbusters costume. You see, I too married a nerd and it’s been a pretty good decision. So I wanted to share some reasons why nerds and opera singers are a good match.

First, we’re both passionate. They both care about perfecting things and pay attention to detail. While a nerd is on hour 27 of his new video game, the singer was using that time anyway to memorize her latest opera role. Win-win!

We’re both self-aware. We both know that everyone knows how dorky it is to love what we love with so much passion, but we boldly continue to love it and be who we are. Taking a stigma and wearing it as a badge of honour makes us both pretty cool.

We both like to be the best at things. Marriage achievement unlocked. Soprano always gets her man.

Nerds have read every comic book, seen every movie, and played every video game related to a zombie apocalypse. So even if they can’t rescue the damsel in distress, they can at least explain what’s going on.

Opera singers know about every possible tragedy, so they’re good at recognizing the signs before the zombie apocalypse. They’re also good at expressing their emotions about it through song.

Both nerds and opera singers have big hearts, loyal friendships, and their own interests. They know how lucky they are to have found their Princess Leia and their Alfredo. In fact, James was even willing to miss the rose city comic-con to get married today.

I’ve watched you both be such amazing supports and cheerleaders for each other. You have already weathered some really huge challenges together and I know you’ll be up to the challenges and changes that are in your path.

So, if everyone will raise a glass with me in a toast to the bride and groom. Brindisi per gli sposi. To James and Emily!
