Wedding Speeches

Pretty nervous, but hope the content in here helps other nervous best men!

This was a modest wedding. We liked it that way. The speech felt a little bit formal for a fairly intimate gathering of around 50 people but overall it went down well. Nobody was offended and it was a priviledge to be able to get away with some cheap gags.

Hi – Thought I would share some tips for writing a speech whilst it is still fresh.  The best piece of advice I read was START EARLY (i.e. as soon as you are asked), and my speech was written loosely over about a 10 month period. You cannot hope to write a funny, original speech in the last week before the wedding – the pressure will be enormous.  Next, try and resist the temptation to use cliché jokes or tired one-liners. Our wedding was in Nelson, New Zealand and we had a wonderful day. My brother Luke (the best man) made a couple of gentle jokes about what a nerd I was - this speech really confirmed it! But it also went down really well. MS Excel calculates numbers of days just by subtracting one cell from another so I was able to produce accurate numbers with very little work.

I had a lot of fun (and a little pain) preparing this speech and even more delivering it. This site was a tremendous help. I read literally hundreds of the speeches (not just FOB ones). I didn't want just a bullet point list of well-worn jokes, but a narrative which not only described my feelings but would also entertain. So much of a wedding speech (particularly FOB) depends on circumstances and no two people's are the same, but there are similarities and I was interested in everyone's story and how they told it, some of which I could take and fashion it to my own.
