About

Birkhill Castle is a stunning building on the banks of the River Tay set within 1500 acres of Scottish woodland, farmland and coastal areas. Built in 1780, it is the ancestral home of the Earl of Dundee and his family, who, until recently, used the Castle as their family home.

Even though Birkhill Castle is steeped in history and grandeur, it offers a warm welcome when you enter the front door. Although the Castle is now a business, plenty of thoughtful touches make this a luxury home from home.

We offer a minimum 2-night stay wedding package, meaning your wedding will be an event worthy of the occasion. You will get exclusive use of the Castle and the estate during your stay, so it feels like you are getting that fairy tale wedding you've always dreamed of.

Birkhill Castle has 13 double and 2 single rooms, so it can sleep 28 adults. We also have a beautiful nursery room that can sleep 6 children. Most of these rooms have their own private bathroom, ample storage, and stunning views out onto the estate and over the River Tay.

We have 7 different locations where the ceremony can take place, from inside the Grand Ballroom to an outdoor ceremony on the front lawn overlooking the Firth of Tay. Every wedding here is bespoke; we can help you create an unforgettable wedding day.

We are also in a perfect location to see some of Scotland's finest sights. Only 20 minutes from St Andrews, an hour to Edinburgh and an hour and a half to the Cairngorm National Park, you can have an authentic Scottish experience.

Our location also offers our golfing couples a very unique opportunity. Over 100 golf courses are within an hour's drive of the Castle, including the Old Course in St Andrews and the championship courses at Gleneagles and Carnoustie.

Set within our secluded Walled Gardens is our heated outdoor swimming pool (between April and September), which offers a tranquil space to relax with friends and family. Wander down through our wild garden and stumble onto the estate's private beach, where you could have a BBQ or swim in the waters of the Tay if you're feeling very brave.

For those interested in faster-paced activities, why not have a game of tennis on our own private court in the gardens or try some archery on the front lawn? With 1500 acres of private land, the estate has endless paths and routes to explore. Whether you walk along the coastal path to see the ruins of Balmerino Abbey or simply stroll up the drive to see our horses, there is a walk for everyone.

After a long day of exploring the estate, what could be better than enjoying a wee dram in the sitting room before tucking into a high-end meal prepared by a local private chef?

At Birkhill Castle, we are very proud to work with local people and businesses to showcase the best of Scotland. We collaborate with talented people from a whole host of different professions so we can help you plan activities to make your stay the most memorable.

We've had falconry displays in the front garden, cooking classes led by fine dining chefs and murder mystery nights with paid actors. We will try our best to accommodate and assist in organising any requests you may have, so be as imaginative as you can.

Have a meal in the dining room or maybe join in with a traditional ceilidh in the ballroom at Birkhill Castle. Whatever your flavour, we have something for you! No matter which room you choose to spend time in, you will be surrounded by true Scottish history.

From King James I's rumoured love interest to William Wallace's standard bearer, every portrait tells a story of an essential character in our wonderful nation's rich past. Now is the chance to add your history to the Castle!
