Chaucer Barn is a wedding and event venue located in Norwich in Norfolk, England.
The tone of the award winning Chaucer Barn is one of stylish informality, ranging from the cathedral-like space of the main hall to the contemporary chic of the pink sitting room. Filled with textiles and artefacts brought by the owner from far eastern travels, the layout is open plan, with four open fires and many hidden corners for guests to relax. The conversion is a masterful juxtaposition of ancient and modern.
Chaucer Barn is a traditional Norfolk flint barn, built in 1836. The East wing is a contemporary conversion of the old flint milking parlour, featuring a two story wall of glass which runs along the complete length of the west side in order to show off the stunning view over the main lawn, with it’s topiary pyramid forest and parkland with woodland behind.
Gardens and grounds:
Set in the rolling hills of North Norfolk, the award-winning gardens (2nd place Royal Horticultural Society 2019 garden photography competition) are a mixture of unique contemporary formality (including a Yew pyramid forest, and Japanese Newaki garden), and informal nature, including a wildflower garden, and Piette Oudolph inspired wild borders. The grounds are a re-wilded magical valley, with Oak Avenue, leading to a stone circle.
Our various ceremony areas:
Main Hall ceremony: capacity 100. Stunning cathedral-like space of oak and stone for inside ceremonies.
Patio ceremony: capacity 80. Intimate sun-trap in the sheltered sunken patio.
Main lawn ceremony: capacity 200. Formal grandeur beside, glorious herbaceous borders with jaw-dropping view of topiary and pyramid forest.
Wildflower lawn ceremony: capacity 200. Informal and intimate: sunken lawn, with view of living willow tunnel and heavenly wildflower garden.
Woodland Grove ceremony: capacity 250. Magical, woodland grove: enter through a glorious wisteria tunnel, you will be completely surrounded by trees. Wild and natural, our most popular ceremony area.
Stone Circle ceremony: capacity 150. At the end of our oak avenue is a stone circle. In the middle of the circle, sitting on top of a massive upside-down tree stump known as “The Druid’s Portal” is a huge, crystal of Merlinite. Tie the knot somewhere truly unique and experience the ancient Celtic magic of the stone circle.
Receptions areas:
East Wing: Winter capacity: 80. Summer capacity: 110. Dine under the massive oak beam ceiling of the east wing. With two open fires in winter and in the summer, extend out onto the patio under an elegant stretch tent canopy.
Marquee receptions. Choose from the Top Lawn with its glorious view over rolling parkland. Or below in the valley; choose our Wildflower Lawn for marquee receptions.
What makes Chaucer Barn unique?
The award winning topiary at Chaucer Barn is completely unique. Nowhere else on the planet will you find a forest of Yew pyramids, some of them over 20 feet tall. The topiary also includes Japanese “Newaki”, an Elizabethan Knot garden, “Cloud hedges”, not to mention the Alice-in-Wonderland spirals.
