A bespoke magical venue
Francesca and I were married on 15th June 2023 and we held our wedding reception at Grittleton House in Wiltshire. An old school is probably an unlikely event for a wedding, however the moment we set foot inside Grittleton House we were inspired by the architecture, the history and the welcome.
All the way leading up to the wedding, Grittleton House were easy to communicate with and often responded out of hours, we really got the feeling that our day was just as important to Grittleton House as it was to us!
The people
Emma, the resident wedding organiser filled us with confidence the moment we met her. We both came away with the feeling that ours was the only wedding that mattered. The Grittleton House experience is definitely not one of a ‘revolving door’ but a bespoke wedding with the added feeling that nothing would be too much trouble.
Emma and I joked about how I was her ‘favourite groom’ .. Now I’m quite sure that was only a temporary title and shared with endless others but that is definitely not how it felt! Both Francesca and I always felt, through the process that our day at Grittleton House was special and important.
The staff were polite, courteous, couldn’t do enough for us and for the most part were silently working away in the background. The house is structured such that there is an aisle that runs parallel to the main hall (that you and your guests would use). As such, staff are able to seamlessly work between the kitchen, bar and reception room without imposing unnecessarily on our day. Further, when you did need help, the Grittleton House ethos is definitely one of ‘just help and ask questions later’.
Location .. Location
The house is in a wonderful location just on the outskirts of the Cotswolds. There are 11 bedrooms inside the house, there is extra accommodation on site (in the stables), there are B&B’s walking distance and the Neeld Arms pub has four rooms less than 50 steps away.
Francesca and I were always looking for a church service and the beautiful St Mary the Virgin (Church of England) is only 60 steps from the house. You really get a sense of community working with the Grittleton team and their suppliers.
Grittleton House have a list of suppliers they’ve worked with in the past, of those suppliers we used from their list we found them professional, friendly and experienced, helping deliver a truly wonderful day.
For those looking for a civil ceremony, the house is licensed for weddings and has a number of beautiful rooms with multiple possibilities to ensure your day is as unique as you are.
Something tasty
We had a strict budget, despite this we had endless comments from our guests both during and after the wedding saying how amazing the food was! We were both far too nervous and excited to eat much! However our guests have been telling us that there was more food than they could imagine and it was to a very high standard! The main course (pork) was tasty and delicate, the desert (sticky toffee pudding) was light and a huge hit with everyone. The evening food (‘something and chips') was equally impressive, there was lots of it and just as delicious as the wedding breakfast! A number of guests that had to leave early ended up taking more away with them as they went in little boxes!
We tucked into breakfast the following morning and it was amazing! After our wedding we spent a few days at a ‘high end’ hotel in the Cotswolds and their breakfast couldn’t come close to that we had at Grittleton House!
Over an above
Our guests didn’t notice but there were things (decorations etc that weren’t there during previous visits) that we noticed Grittleton House had done .. Grittleton House did everything to make the house look as spectacular as they could.
During the meal we had a small “gravy issue” with the brides dress!! (Not a fault of the house, it was clumsy knife work due to nerves) .. Francesca started to hyperventilate, I kicked into full-on ‘husband to the rescue’ mode and ran to the office for help! The only person there at the time was Vanessa (who owns the house) .. and she took it upon herself to come and help! If I was looking for a way to demonstrate how the Grittleton team make you feel, it was this moment. From the top down, they act first-ask questions later and above all they all care!
Your house, your home
From the moment you arrive at the house on the day you’ll feel like Lord and Lady of the manor! For the bride, she has a dedicated room to prepare and get ready.
Top Tip: If you choose to stay in the Lady Edith room, not only is it beautiful, its right next door to the bridal preparation room! Also, its at the top of the wonderful grand staircase, which makes it very convenient to trip backwards and forwards during the day/evening should you wish.
During the day, the staff took control of our suppliers, ensuring people knew where to go and what to do when they arrived. They would also have chased up suppliers if there was a problem on the day. All without troubling the wedding party!
Then in the evening after the party we retired (with those guests staying) to the Family Library and continued our evening. It was completely seamless, we weren’t troubled by any staff, this truly felt like we were in our own home!
When we finally got everyone off to bed (some easier than others) I had time to go downstairs and collect a few bits. Imagine that feeling you get when you pop downstairs in your own home for something .. but its much much bigger and impressive! Take some time to just take in the beauty of the house, all quiet and still .. after such a chaotic day it was an incredible feeling! It’s a magical place during the day and in the evening, you almost expect that, should you find a wardrobe, you wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a snowy Narnia behind it!
The rooms
All the rooms in the house are amazing. Clearly Grittleton House have spent a lot of time and effort in carefully designing each individual room to a very high standard. Each is unique and in keeping with house and they are all huge (with one exception - which is an adjoining room).
The verdict
We saw a number of venues before we settled on Grittleton House and a number of them will make you feel like you’re marrying in Hogwarts .. However, at those venues we got the feeling it would be a “Warner Bros wedding” .. it would follow the same theme as everyone else’s, staff trudging through the same routine, no room for individuality and it would all come at a Hollywood price!
By contrast, Grittleton House dating back to the 1600’s is the real deal! It’s beautiful, its got character and its set in stunning Cotswold scenery with beautifully manicured grounds. Most importantly, its privately owned by Vanessa and her family who will make you feel so very welcome and its staffed by a team, who, (run by Emma) simply can’t do enough for you .. and when they all go to bed, its all yours!
