About

Hallington Mill

Set in the heart of the beautiful Northumbrian countryside, Hallington Mill is a rural retreat with real personality and warmth. Located close to Matfen and Corbridge, easily accessed yet tucked away off the beaten track, it is nestled in a secluded valley and surrounded by acres of private woodland, streams and open countryside. A hidden gem, which offers something unique with a very intimate feel.

As the proud owners, Elizabeth & Rob, we fell in love with Hallington Mill in 2016 and took on the rejuvenation of the estate as a real-life family adventure, a true labour of love. Offering you the warmest of welcomes, our approach is down-to-earth and genuine. Weddings here are an invitation to join this adventure and make it part of your own story.

At the heart of the estate, the historic Mill and Threshing Barn have been lovingly restored and blend luxury, design and historic features with a relaxing pragmatism. Providing spacious accommodation for up to 18 adults plus children, they feature two large Bridal Suite options and plenty of space to prepare for your big day. There are also several entertaining spaces, a huge country farmhouse kitchen, cinema room and a dining room which seats 20 - perfect for intimate weddings, pre-wedding dinners and post-wedding breakfasts!

The Mill and Barn are available for small intimate weddings of up to 20 guests throughout the year. For larger groups we have the Hay Shed, once the rustic backdrop to our very first wedding. This characterful building has been lovingly converted and blends its industrial heritage with touches of elegance, providing a unique space in which you can tailor and host your wedding for up to 120 guests. We are fully licenced and also welcome celebrant lead ceremonies.

With either option you can hold your ceremony in various places on the grounds & woodland allowing you to create your own, intimate wedding experience.

Our Kind Of Weddings....

Not a traditional venue as such, we only host a small number of weddings each year, in part to respect the beauty and tranquillity of the site but also to balance the environmental impact. Our approach is deliberately low-key and we cater for those with an independent flair who seek a more relaxed occasion. We feel weddings should be savoured and never rushed so our focus is on bringing people together in a place which helps you to slow down, remember what’s important and create precious new memories together.

As one of only a few dry-hire venues in Northumberland, we try to balance the freedom for you to be as creative as you want, alongside taking the stress out of it all. We take a simple and transparent approach to pricing; a set price for the accommodation plus an event fee which covers the dry-hire of our Hay Shed and use of grounds. No packages or timetables so you can be creative & flexible.

You are then free to source from a variety of trusted suppliers for catering, drinks, furnishings, flowers, entertainment, etc so you can structure your wedding in a way that is personal and meaningful to you. We only recommend those suppliers with whom we have directly experienced their commitment to great customer service and professionalism. If none of these suits your taste then we are happy to welcome new ones or let you take a more DIY approach.

Your wedding and memories of its setting will be part of your life’s journey and add to your own adventure. We would love to welcome you here for a visit with Rob or I, hopefully you will fall in love with Hallington Mill, just as we have.

Beautiful, scenic, organised, helpful, perfect!

Hallington Mill hosted our wedding in early September (2020) and we can’t say thank you enough to Elizabeth and Rob for making our day the most wonderful and special ?

I would also caveat this review with the fact that I am not a reviewer and I write this because of the exceptional experience we have had.

THE MILL
The Mill itself is beautiful. All rooms are large and thoughtfully finished in keeping with the historical building and the communal areas are perfect for big family gatherings and meals. The dining room is particularly stunning and has to be seen in person!! There is a perfectly placed wood burner and the whole house has a cozy feel with multiple rooms all with really lovely views. The outside is equally as striking with a large patio, surrounded by woods and Northumberland countryside. The back garden catches the afternoon and evening sun and is perfect (as we found) for bbqs and sitting with family and friends. There is a children’s play area, which kept our exceptionally active god children (and to be honest most of our wedding party) busy, but it’s off to the side so you can keep the children in eye sight, but it doesn’t spoil the beautiful tumbling view from the patio. If walking is also on your list, Elizabeth and Rob have managed the woods and surrounding fields in such a way so you can ramble around and see the incredible views without having to venture too far. The fields have, again, been thoughtfully cultivated and are full of wild flowers, native plants and bubbling creeks. The area is also on the edge of the national dark sky reserve and the sky is BRIGHT at night. It is honestly a truly stunning place with a relaxing and homely feel.

With the wedding you have sole use of the Mill from the Thursday so plenty of time to prep and set up. We had a lovely pre-wedding family dinner on the Thursday and then the dinning room became our war room on the Friday. There’s so much space we had multiple making and sorting areas and it make for lovely getting ready photos!

Whilst remote, we found Corbridge really easy to get to and there are two restaurants that we found would deliver if you called! All of our guests found the Mill easily and most said the drive there (which is AMAZING!) really set the scene for the wedding and added to the excitement!

In the context of COVID, the Mill was exceptionally clean and there was a sanitising station. They have implemented a number of COVID specific procedures and we felt exceptionally safe the entire time we were there.

THE WEDDING
We didn’t end up with the wedding we had initially planned (obviously as a result of COVID). For those planning outside of the COVID restrictions, the Mill is a blank canvas. We fell in love with it the second we visited and had planned a festival style wedding with 2 large tipis, 2 open bars and food trucks for 150 people. The Mill has a number of locations for different aspects of the day (woods, wild flower meadows and fields looking out over the countryside) and so you can make the day as bespoke as you like. Prior to COVID, Elizabeth was so helpful in providing recommendations and referrals to local vendors and many of those who we spoke to had been to the Mill to view the same so they knew what we were talking about. Elizabeth made what seemed like a mammoth task, much easier and more fun and her emails checking in and sending updates kept us pepped and going, especially when the pandemic happened and things became more uncertain.

From March to July we were unsure as to whether to proceed with the wedding. We cut down to the allowed 30 people and were considering whether to proceed. Elizabeth was there every step of the way, again not only providing logistical help, talking through our different options (including postponing) and providing recommendations for alternative vendors, but was also being constantly positive whatever the outcome. Amongst near constant doom and gloom she was a needed light.

We ended up going ahead with the wedding and quite frankly it was perfect. We used the back garden and with help from a number of vendors, (Birdcages and Butterflies - decor, Jacob & Tori - catering, Northumbria Classic Cars), we were able to have the perfect wedding. The Mill grounds not only gave a beautiful backdrop but some of our flowers and our table decs (so much ivy) were from the Mill grounds. Elizabeth and Rob were quietly and invisibly on hand throughout the lead up and the day to provide anything we needed and the day went without a hitch!

Again we cannot thank Elizabeth and Rob and the whole Mill team (Linda was also so helpful!) for not only providing such excellent accommodation but also helping to make our wedding day so incredible!!!

We will absolutely can not recommend highly enough!

Troy & Andy x

Hidden gem in nature

We fell in love at our first visit with this gorgeous venue. Elizabeth made the booking process straight forward and was on hand for queries throughout. Elizabeth and Rob fwere on hand to ensure we settled in when we arrived and had all we needed. The accomodation, venue and grounds are all beautiful and immaculate. Lots of thought has been put into the venue keeping it in keeping with the natural surroundings but a truly flexible venue to create your perfect day. We enjoyed every moment of our weekend and all our guests loved their stay. What a special place you have created. Thank you x

A Perfect Wedding Weekend

We were able to create our own wedding at Hallington Mill from eating the food we love to having an outdoor ceremony in the Beautiful woodland. Rob and Elizabeth were amazing from the firs viewing to our wedding day. The estate works a lot like having a tent based wedding but without any of the hassle! We set the format of our full wedding stay enjoying a dinner with friends and family the night before our beautiful wedding day then even a brunch the morning after. Would thoroughly recommend Hallington Mill, there is just nothing else quite like the setting and opportunities that come with hosting your wedding there.

Amazing, amazing, amazing

We organised our DIY wedding at Hallington Mill this year. As soon as we first visited, we were sold instantly - this venue is set in the most stunning location within the beautiful Northumberland countryside. The land hosts multiple fields, views for days and a gorgeous wooded area with winding wooded walks and a stream running through it.
We were lucky enough to be some of the first people to also make use of the fabulous renovations that have recently been done to the threshing barn (where we had our sit down meal and DJ/dancefloor) and hay shed (which we used as our 'honeymoon suite' and was the perfect setting for me to get ready with my family and friends on the morning of the wedding). The attention to detail that Elizabeth and Rob have worked so hard on has really paid off - with simple, rustic, tasteful touches throughout that emphasise and celebrate their natural surroundings.
Elizabeth and Rob are also the kindest, most accommodating and thoughtful hosts - who were so welcoming to us and we really felt that they were as excited and invested in our wedding day as we were! They were so accessible and helpful right from when we first booked and were quick to answer any questions/queries or help out wherever they could.
The whole weekend was amazing from start to finish - from our woodland ceremony, to playing lawn games and rounders on the fields, to waking up as newlyweds to stunning views of the Northumberland countryside, to having our close family and friends back for a post-wedding brunch in the sunshine.
I would recommend this venue whole heartedly to anyone that is looking for a rustic, laid back wedding that you can truly make your own, whilst being in the most stunning of locations. I wish I could do it all over again! We'll definitely be back to Hallington Mill in the future!

It was nothing short of perfect....

We held our wedding reception in a marquee in the grounds of the Mill in September and we stayed in the Mill itself for a few days before and afterwards. It was nothing short of perfect. The Mill is a beautiful home and the grounds are equally impressive. The house was immaculate and had everything we could’ve wanted; there was even a basket of pastries waiting when we arrived. Elizabeth and Rob are wonderful hosts. Attentive and great company, while allowing you space to feel at home. The Mill has been beautifully refurbished. All of the rooms are perfectly put together, but the dining room really stands out. It’s obvious how much Rob and Elizabeth care about the Mill. We chose to have one of the most special days of our lives at the Mill because, not only is it a truly beautiful, private and unique venue, but also we knew Elizabeth and Rob would care about the day as much as we did. As soon as we can, we’ll find a reason to get back to the Mill.
